BRDM-2 (2A14): High Caliber Reconnaissance

  • Description:
    • The BRDM-2 is a Soviet made 4x4 armored vehicle designed in the early 1960’s. The vehicle first entered service in 1962 primary used as a reconnaissance vehicle. Several variants from ATGM vehicles to Fire and Rescue vehicles were developed and used throughout the Soviet Union. In 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed leaving the successor states with a random assortment of vehicles ranging from main battle tanks to surface-to-air platforms, including the BRDM-2. The newly founded state of Georgia was also a recipient of the BRDM-2. In 2010, the Georgian government founded State Military Scientific-Technical Center “Delta” (STC Delta) in order to create and enhance defense technology. One of the products of STC Delta is the BRDM-2 (2A14) which features several upgrades in armament, mobility, and armor over the baseline BRDM-2. One of the most noticeable upgrades is the DRWS-2 Remote Weapon Station which houses a 23mm autocannon with a coaxial 7.62mm ПКТ machine gun, with thermal optic technology. This allows the BRDM-2 to engage light vehicles and positions as well as focus on its main capability, reconnaissance. The modernized BRDM-2 was accepted into the Georgian Self-Defense Forces in the mid-2010’s with 17 currently in service.

  • Additional Notes:
    • The DRWS Remote Weapon Station can also feature ATGM’s; however it isn’t known if the Georgian Army uses this capability.
