BOV-30

History and Description

Development of the wheeled armored combat vehicle - BOV began in Yugoslavia, in the late seventies at the TAM factory in Maribor. There, the company thought to develop an armored vehicle based on the chassis of the standard military truck TAM 110, which had already been produced in large series and had been providing the needs of the JNA (Yugoslav People’s Army). The development proceeded in two directions, BOV-1 (a self-propelled AT vehicle) and BOV-3 (a self-propelled AA gun).

BOV-30 was the last SPAAG version of BOV developed by TAM. The vehicle was fitted with a larger enclosed turret armed with twin 30mm cannons. It had a cyclic fire rate of 600 rds/gun/min and an effective vertical range of 2800 meters. Some sources suggest that the 30 mm weapons were copies of Czechoslovak ZK.453 cannons found on M53/59 Praga SPAAG. This most likely isn’t the case as those guns are magazine fed, while BOV-30 weapons seem to be fed by a belt. Additionally, the rate of fire stated in those same sources doesn’t match that of the Czechoslovak guns. Instead, the weapons are more likely Yugoslav M86 30 mm guns produced by Zastava and also installed on another domestic SPAAG called SPAT 30/2. Two three-barreled BDK M79 smoke grenade dischargers were mounted on either side of the turret. Four prototype vehicles were shown on the Yugoslav military parade on May 9, 1985. The fate of those prototypes is unknown. Reportedly they were destroyed on Bosnian training grounds in 1996 as part of a program to reduce surplus weapons.
