BOV-3 AX

History and Description

In order to make use of dozens of BOV-3 self-propelled anti-air systems sitting in storage, Serbian company Yugoimport developed an upgrade package that focused on improving its firepower. This was accomplished by adding eight Strela-2M/A MANPADS - 4 on each side of the open-top turret and battlefield management system (BMS) terminal. Strela-2M/A fires an improved Yugoslav version of the 9K32M missile. Using more advanced electronics, the guidance section was reduced in size and weight. This allowed the warhead’s explosive mass to increase by 40% (from 370 g to 518 g). According to one source about 4,000 were produced. BOV-3 AX can engage aerial targets such as fixed and rotary wing aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles, and precision-guided weapons at altitudes of up to 2500 m. The vertical firing range of its M55A4B1 triple 20 mm gun is from 1000 to 1500 m, and its Strela-2M/A missile range is 1500 to 2500 m. Additionally, BOV-3 can be used for the engagement of lightly armored and non-armored ground targets, field fortifications, as well as zones of manpower concentration. BOV-3 AX was first publicly seen at the "Partner 2009” military fair in Belgrade. Afterward, it was presented at both the 2011 and 2013 fairs, however, the weapon did not make it past the prototype stage.
