After 3.3, bombers are just frustrating. They’re slow and have bad offensive armaments. Furthermore, strike aircrafts constantly steal your base forcing you to go further. Fighters can climb up to current bomber altitude so you get shredded no matter what by 20mm cannons. Either move bomber spawn higher, have some AI fighter escorts or you make them tougher to kill. Grinding bombers is the most painful phase of War Thunder right now!
Use search function - there are dozens of threads dealing with bombers and their role in the game. The Ju 88 A-1 at 2.0 is one of the best bombers BR for BR and can win entire matches on its own but you need experience to make it work…
when you get to jet bomber area, you will have more chance.
as told at least 26 th times on the forum: look at Damage model - and you’ll understand that Bombers are shitty.
Per Wings:
a Fighter have 2 to 3 wing sections for a length going from 4m(Bf109) to 7m (P-38) → that’s about 2-3.5m per section
a Bomber have 2 to 3 wing sections for a length going from 7.5m (Pe-2) to 20m (B-29) → that’s about 3.75-10m per section
see the problem? as a fighter, shooting a bomber is easier because whatever where you hit on a wing section, the damage is accumulated on one point - @Smin1080p_WT idea for improvement of Bomber Gameplay starts there,… would you happen to know if any Aircraft Devs, if not bomber specialist Dev, can look onto that?
Sorry but I don’t know any. Historically, bombers always had escorts and are usually in a large group. Perhaps another solution would be more bases on the map? I’m currently grinding the B-25 at 3.7, do you have any tips and tricks because if I climb, I get shredded by I-185s and Wyverns, if I dive I get shredded by everybody.
I agree. At low BRs, bombers are basically invincible since most planes have small calibres or they don’t do a lot of damage and there aren’t a lot of interceptors.
Unless you play the vautour. Then you are fucked.
you might wanna loose the idea of rushing towards a base early on.
i know it sucks to be in a bomber, but going straight forwards toward any bases will simply makes you predictable., therefore, interceptors have low intelligence need to intercept you.
Also, if you see an ennemy fighter coming towards you, flee from it, and use manual gunner (F6 by default - check your binding)
However,… Gaijin still should be looking up to wing sections,… this is a great problem to EVERY bombers. as a mainly fighter player - i can assure you that downing 3 bombers flying in formation will be done within seconds, when done correctly. (can be seen within COOP vs AI Air gamemode)
AI argues - Worthless:
AI Wings (could have been to add AI bomber alongside you, to increase defensive firepower) aren’t going to help bomber gameplay, if bombers are as easy to shot down, and formation will easily broke by any turn you takes (check that in missions solo gameplay,… Wings aren’t moving as good as you)
The low intelligence AI escorts are currently given (we can see AI escorts at high tier, protecting AI bombing groups, but those are stupidly bad)

No. It can go to 8.7 or 8.3. Or even stay at 9.0 but just give it airspawn for the love of god.
Smin’s a community manager, he probably won’t have the most interaction with devs, much less know any specific ideas they might have.
We’re consistently getting updates as well, so buffing something that a large majority of the player base views in disgust might not be the highest priority. Even if bombers got a buff, say they could take more hits or your gunners could aim better, they would still be terribly mundane and picked off easily.
Unless you structure games to where bombers can fly together and maintain a tight formation (Even if there was support for this it probably wouldn’t happen due to the suicidal (in game) level fives that think they’re funny) there can be any real improvements to the gameplay of bombers.
by experience, Smin helped me a lot through some Bugs i have worked up,… and he is able to get Devs interaction as a CM. (even if it’s not a lot)

of course, but let’s start by making bomber having a true damage model (which is just adding new wing sections and maybe 1 body section to large bombers - 50 units within the game?), then working out Gameplay issue.
in the past, i’ve suggested many things:
- having an escort area, in which the player in a fighter killing an ennemy would recieve +50% / +100% reward //or// getting a passive reward for staying within bomber side (area) every x seconds+bonus if bomber reach target.(easy to do so, but Area need to be worked up in size terms and depending BR)
- having similar bonus for bomber players willing to stay in formations (easy to do so, but Area need to be worked up in size terms and depending BR)
- having AI wings (needs to rework AI entirely - heavy & costly)
- having AI escorts (needs to rework AI entirely - heavy & costly)
But if I just hang around in the air, won’t it make it easier for interceptors/fighters to climb and shoot me down? Or should I go bomb some ground targets first?
what about you go edging the map, until the ennemy start fighting with your own fighters, then proceed to aim for nearest base?
Most players rushes to kill, if fighters are closer to them, why would they go for bombers?
just don’t go over the altitude at which you’re making clouds behind you.

more like 4750m at least in top BR,… last time i checked it was the same for Low BR, unless it’s a snowy map.
Got it thx! For me, I think it starts at ~2000m lol but once you get to 4000+ m, most enemy fighters are probably destroying ground targets and can’t climb to you anyways. However, this makes bombers really boring, Gaijin should still take a look at this problem :/ such as your idea about damage model fixes.
At jet tiers bombers are much tougher because they’re defended by 20-30mm cannons, so the only way to take one down is either a missile (which you won’t see much under 8.0) or a lightning-fast dive attack (which will rarely occur if you keep your altitude). Attacking one any other way is a death sentence, you’ll get shredded by the turrets in no time.
So if anything I’d advise you to play bombers there
but he first needs to grind them through. (also, since he’s playing america - not a lot of 20mm/30mm, but more and more .50’s.)
You don’t need to play everything you grind, he can just play fighters to grind up. Though I did miss the fact that he plays USA, that’s a pitty for bomber gameplay
