Think of it like this: You have 5 and an infinite number of issues to factor in.
You’re flying with multiple engines; the positioning of your gunners. How low or high you are.
Where are the enemies? Do you have escort or not? How many enemy planes?
Where are they approaching from? How close are from shooting your ass out of the sky? And how does it affect your bombing run? Unlike a fighter, bombers have a ton of things they need to factor in while on a route to bomb the enemy base or units.
This is often why, sadly, many bomber players just completely focus on the heading to drop bombs, but then worry about fighters, cause they believe they should be high enough that most won’t bother. Even when this is not the case, I’ve seen myself and many others die instead, somehow, while they were out of our effective gun range, where we couldn’t even hit them. Or random times when a single 20mm magically ripped my entire tail off. So I died in a single shot.
You are also in a third-person or first-person perspective; operating a bomber in War Thunder is a whole lot harder than it is to operate a fighter, twin-engine fighter, or interceptor. So you need to guide your shots when leading, but it also requires turning at the right moment before swapping to third person to even hope you can get a shot off at them and hit them. You cannot stand still and expect to hit them while you lead.
I have literally had multiple occasions when I checked my 6, everything clear, returned to check ahead, checked the minimap and watched a red dot suddenly appear seemingly out of nowhere almost on top of me. Apparntly, they were so high above me they didn’t register on my minimap and I might have missed someone 3 miles or more above me. However, they dove on me, developed enough speed that, by the time they showed up on my minimap, they were already in gun range.
Honestly, I am not complaining about the getting shot down part. They got me fair and square. I AM complaining about my gunners being silent deadweight as the attacker dives in.
Tbh the AI shouldn’t do all the work. Better off for Gaijin to actually add adjustable convergence for the turrets because 300 m fixed convergence is awful.
Are you playing on a controller plugged into your PC? because that doesn’t get the locking, on console (at least from my understanding) they get a key bind that snaps their aim to center mass and then they can lead from there while it auto tracks, it works in RB I dunno about sim.
yeah, make the gunner skills set more accurate convergence base on the targets actual range while manually controlled or something.
the plane flies straight for you while in gunner view and you can use keyboard if you wish to maneuver
i really hope you arent using four throttle binds and all of them should be at the same 100% setting anyway if you actually want to do anything. raw altitude doesnt matter, only relative position to allies and enemies.
and might i add the GUNNER VIEW IS THIRD PERSON??? WOW!! i can LOOK AROUND while shooting? revolutionary stuff i know. “i have to control all 4 engines and keep the plane level!!!” the game does this for you and youre flying straight toward the base anyway. GENUINELY just play the game. you have the tools, and are perfectly capable of using them without compromising anything else
To all the people saying no, then lets remove ships AI AA gunners too then right? Its the same concept but apparently ships get to have functional defences for some reason? Complete manual control of AA only from now on fellas, lets see how people do then.
