Background and History

Spoiler

During the early 2000s, the Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau (KMDB) in Ukraine launched a program to re-engineer aging T-64A main battle tanks into a modernized series of heavy infantry fighting vehicles. With vast numbers of surplus T-64A hulls sitting idle in storage, the initiative sought to generate export revenue to fund advanced military designs, sustain domestic defense manufacturing, and restore operational life to the T-64 platform.

The cornerstone of this effort was a versatile chassis modification known as the UMR-64 (УМР-64), intended to serve as the baseline for 15 distinct battlefield roles. The primary configuration developed was the BMPV-64 (БМПВ-64), a heavy tracked troop carrier.

Engineers stripped away the standard T-64A turret, internal loader, and main ammunition storage to convert the tank chassis. The engine and drive sprockets were relocated to the front of the vehicle, transforming the front section into a protective barrier for the crew while opening up the center and rear for a dedicated troop section equipped with dual rear exit doors. Key automotive elements—such as the running gear, tracks, and lower frame—were directly carried over from the donor tank.

For offensive capabilities, the vehicle received a compact, remotely operated gun station integrated into the upper hull, controlled by the gunner from within the fighting compartment. The station housed a 30mm automatic cannon, a medium coaxial machine gun, and multi-directional smoke launchers. Side protection was significantly reinforced using Kontakt-1 explosive reactive armor (ERA) arrays to neutralize anti-tank warheads.

Modification

Spoiler

The upgraded BMPV-64 keeps the heavy, inverted T-64 hull with front-mounted engine protection, but significantly expands its multi-role firepower. It integrates a Barrier ATGM launcher for heavy anti-tank capability alongside two 9K38 Igla MANPADS to counter low-flying air threats. Additionally, it features a refined chassis layout and an improved optronic sight suite complete with a laser rangefinder and thermal imaging capabilities.

crewless turret with -10 gun depression?

Have to say Heavy APC’s are just the best. There also sort of needed as there a bit more survivable concerning drones you can eat up a lot of hits with less risk to crew in theory.
