Welcome to the suggestion for the BMPT-72 Terminator-2! Described as a Tank Support Combat Vehicle, the BMPT-72 doesn’t have a large caliber gun like a main battle tank, but uses a variety of armaments in order to provide fire support and assist other armored vehicles. In War Thunder, this would play like an IFV, but feature heavier armor than one might expect from an IFV.
The BTR-T, an early attempt at a heavy infantry fighting vehicle.
Developed from experiences in Chechnya, the BTR-T was an attempt to provide a vehicle that could provide fire support and transport for infantry. Based on older T-55s, the BTR-T could mount a variety of armaments and be far better protected than BTRs or BMPs used by the Russian Ground Forces. Ultimately, the vehicle never saw interest, even in Russia, largely due to the economic issues of the time.
Around the time the BTR-T was developed, a new vehicle, later to be known as BMPT Terminator, was created. This utilized a heavier chassis equivalent to the T-90, with significantly improved armament. The initial version used a 30 mm 2A42 autocannon, four 9M133 Kornets, two 30 mm AGS-17D grenade launchers, and a 7.62 mm PKTM machine gun. A later version presented in 2002 had two 30 mm 2A42s, four 9M120 Ataka missiles, two 30 mm AGS-17D grenade launchers, and a 7.62 mm PKTM machine gun. The idea around the vehicle was similar to the BTR-T, provide a mobile fire support vehicle that could support infantry and armored vehicles. Although it passed state testing in 2006, it only officially entered service in 2018, and has been seen in very limited numbers in Russian military service.
Uralvagonzavod, the developers of the BMPT Terminator, began a parallel development of the vehicle, later known by the name BMPT-72 Terminator-2. This variant was designed with export in mind, and uses the chassis of an upgraded T-72, allowing militaries to upgrade their T-72 fleets to include support vehicles at a lower cost. Besides the chassis change, another change was the removal of the two grenade launchers, reducing the crew to 3 people instead of 5. Currently, the BMPT-72 has not seen much interest.
Nice, so this is the version that Russia has adopted. I’m sure we’ll see it in the near term. +1
It shouldn’t be too OP, the turret is made of paper armor so it will likely run into the same issues as the QN506 and Namer 30 (RCWS-30) and have its ammo either easily burnt out so you’re screwed with 0 ammo left or full detonation/blown up. HE/HEAT will be this thing’s worst nightmare.
I think it should get 3UBR11 APFSDS-T rounds and be placed probably at 11.3-11.7 (based on the new 12.0 cap) since it does have Relikt, IRST, and the RoF from the 30mm will shred aircraft and armor/modules of vehicles. Not to mention the high-penetration missiles.
Depending on which chassis it is mounted. Russia actually have a Terminator-2 in a T-90M chassis if I’m not wrong, either can be 2018 or 2020 improved variant with better transmission, which means more reverse.
Such a shame we still haven’t seen a T-72 with better reverse in-game yet. Maybe we’ll seen one day when we have enough modern vehicles for improved versions of the T-80BVM (obr 2023) and T-90M (obr 2020).
Considering it have MBT level protection, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it at 11.7, which would be a good BR to be honest,
Also, I really wanted to see vehicles like BTR-90 (Berezhok), BMD-4M, BMP-3 “Manul” or BMP-3 “Dragun” to fill the gaps until a possible addition of the Terminator-2 in 12.0 or 11.7.
I think that would be way too low. I think 11.3-11.7 (based on the 12.0 cap) honestly, especially if it can use full Relikt (soft bags too). The twin high RoF 30mm’s would shred everything, plus the missiles, and grenade launcher.
Too high I think, IFV like weapon won’t provide as much efficiency as real big cannon, the reaction of missile is too slow, and auto cannon can’t pen enemy’s front.
Plus T-72 hull means you can’t sneak around like a real light vehicle.
It would be far worse than a T-72B3, even worse than T-90A, so I would give it 10.7.
and 1 thing not sure is it’s turret armor, from some source it’s as thick as a T-72, able to stop any ke ammo, and others say it’s not so good and can be pen by top APFSDS in that BR.
There’s no way. Way to thin with no armor beyond composite appliqué armor visible. Not to mention, many electrical components are exposed just under the guns.
As for the lack of frontal pen, take account the dual 30mm’s with APFSDS-T will be able to knock out any gun module practically instantly and when followed up with a missile, guaranteed kill. It would delete any light vehicles and aircraft with ease. All side armor is negatable. I couldn’t go any lower than 11.0 personally but anyone of course can make there interpretation.
I think still not fast enough in close encounter, and not mention mid/long range fight. T-15 with 57mm gun would fit this more, able to knock out gun module or pen weak point from front, and followed up with a missile
+1, A family of vehicles I’ve wanted to see in the game for a long time. Would be great to see the Terminator-1 added to the TT and have this come possibly as a premium vehicle.
The Namer 30 is BR 10.7. The Namer has a low RoF 30mm Bushmaster capable of firing APFSDS-T, coaxial 7.62mm machine gun, and 2x Spike’s that have 900mm of pen behind ERA and are FnF but struggle with guidance. It also has a self-defense 60mm mortar. This is all based on a Merkava hull with a frontally mounted engine and poorly implemented composite armor.
The BMPT Terminator-2 is equipped with dual 30mm 2A42’s that can fire APFSDS-T that have a much higher RoF, 4x 9M120 missiles with 800mm of pen behind ERA that are laser guided, 2x 7.62mm coaxial machine guns, and a 30mm grenade launcher based on a T-72 hull with K-5/Relikt ERA and composite armor, on par with the T-72B3 with its Relikt armor package.
They both have lackluster maneuverability in different aspects, the BMPT has higher max speed with a non-existent reverse speed while the Namer has average forward and reverse speeds. Both struggle with the same weakness of ammunition cookoff or detonation and exposed electronics due to the remote turrets.
The BMPT Terminator-2 will significantly out perform the Namer 30 in all categories (except maneuverability, which both struggle with in different ways) which automatically should place it at BR 11.3 (11.0 at the absolute minimum).
This can be said of the Terminator-1 as well which are both pretty much the same thing.
