reliable way to nerf it (and every other Russian tank) is to give it realistic protection past ERA (around 420mm of effective APFSDS protection).

Umm…
Can you read?
Look at T-72 1989. Perhaps, I forgot to mention that by effective APFSDS protection I’ve meant dividing base hull protection by 1.27, which is normalization multiplier for long rods at 68°:
T-90M and BMPT have the same composite layout.

Am I missing something here? Why look at T-72B 1989?

T-72B89, T-90, T-90A/S, T-90M and BMPT based on T-90 have the same composite - 176 mm of steel, the rest is rubber/polyethylene material
I see.
However with Relikt I doubt any top tier rounds are penetrating anyway. Considering with our VERY basic ERA modelling in game, Relikt is actually underperforming at angles like on the UFP.
This means that you indeed need 550+ pen, but in armor analysis it’s gonna show you 433 mm value when using long rod APFSDS. For example, you can verify it via Obj.292, which has same layout as T-80U/BVM, but no ERA. Base protection - 233/68 = ~621, armor analysis value = ~488
fr i feel this is the biggest problem, a more in depth ERA system would be nice, instead of it just being a lump of extra armour
Definitely. It would completely prevent flat angles from getting eaten. Though with this spaghetti shtfest of a game engine i’m not sure if the game would just blow up or not xd
theyre adding infantry with this same game engine so i think its very possible
True.
Yeah, Relikt is very powerful just like Kontakt-5, simulations show that the plates degrade the rods to the point they lose up to 20/40% of their penetration. American tests of M829 vs. Kontakt-5 showed ~95 mm penetration reduction - about 20%, and I don’t remember the details but YouTube simulation of LOSAT vs. Relikt on T-80BVM showed 40% penetration reduction. That is regardless of how much penetration the rod has. ERA should be buffed, but base armor should be nerfed, if I had to simplify things.
Speaking of Oplot, I haven’t seen very well modelled simulations on Nozh/Duplet ERA, but if A. Tarasenko’s articles aren’t lying, Duplet should reduce long rod penetration by 90% thus making Oplot impenetrable first-shot. Sounds mythical, but there aren’t any counter proofs really…
The publicly available brochure says this is exclusively for older rounds. I’ll fetch it real quick.

I see. Makes sense, they have a penetrator the size of normal WW2 round, just of 25-30 mm caliber. 60% is still great against rods
its quite funny how distorted the expectations when playing warthunder vs real life are because like in warthunder we get very sad that something like this doesnt defend against the best rounds in the world but irl theyre quite happy to have it defend against much older rounds which are more common
that wasnt my image blame the guy i replied to
