Vehicle History

In 2014, Kurganmashzavod developed and submitted a new light tank design for testing, one based on the BMP-3 that was already in mass production. This modification was designated as the BMD-4M2 and was equipped with the Sinitsa weapon system from the BMP-3 with an advanced panoramic sight. It retained the powerful and diverse armament set up of the BMP-3 as well, consisting of a 100 mm cannon-launcher, 30 mm autocannon, and a 7.62 mm PKTM machine gun. The BMD-4M2 successfully passed tests and was adopted by the Russian Army in 2016.

Introducing the BMD-4M2!

A new modification of the proven premium BMD-4M is now coming to the Soviet research tree! Meet the BMD-4M2 “Sinitsa”, which will likely become your favorite top-tier light tank when the Tusk Force major update releases if you play the Soviet ground forces tree. Here’s why!

The BMD-4M2 differs from its premium variant in its new turret design. It features the Sinitsa weapon system from the BMP-3 with a new panoramic sight and high-resolution thermal imager for the commander and gunner. It’s weaponry is also taken from the BMP-3, sporting the excellent combination of a 100 mm main gun and a 30 mm autocannon. The 100 mm 2A70 cannon can fire two types of high-explosive rounds, but it has another trick up its sleeve! It can launch a tandem-charge ATGM, a max of four of these can be taken into battle. Despite this, you’ll likely find that the 30 mm autocannon will end up becoming your primary weapon. It can easily take down helicopters and IFVs, and even MBTs when engaging from the side and the rear, which won’t be too difficult thanks to the high speed of the BMD.

Largely shared from the BMP-3, the BMD-4M2’s chassis features a high power-to-weight ratio and a speed of up to 70 km/h. Its also amphibious, and can traverse over water at a relatively respectable speed of around 10 km/h.

While you can’t expect miracles in terms of protection for these kinds of vehicles, the BMD-4M2 can at least withstand heavy machine guns from the front, and some poorly placed autocannon rounds as well. Generally speaking though, any hit from a conventional tank cannon will likely cause serious damage. Make sure to use your smoke grenades to retreat where possible, just don’t smoke off your teammates!

That’s it for the BMD-4M2, this new light tank will be joining rank VI of the USSR research tree when the Tusk Force major update releases. It’s coming real soon!

Please note that this vehicle’s characteristics may be changed before it is added to the game.

Does the USSR TT have by far the most light vehicles with autocannons in the game?

Why do they keep getting more and other TTs that have suggestions that have been passed to devs keep getting ignored.

The imbalance was noticable before, but now that you can scout targets with light vehicle drones, it is even more important to have them on your team. There are options to add for other nations besides Russia.

Equally develop the TTs you added

It just wouldn’t be a War Thunder update without Russia getting something that entered service within the last decade.

When do other nations get to have indirect artillery?

Does it still retain the 35°/sec horizontal traverse speed?

Because the concept of ‘light tanks’ in the way of light armored vehicles with common caliber was ended in late World War Two, and mostly other vehicles with equal characteristics were, technically, labeled as either tank destroyers (e.g. 2S25 Sprut) or infantry support vehicles (e.g. PT-76).

Nowadays, in modern Russia doctrine, most of the ‘light tanks’ are dedicated for infantry transport or support, (e.g. Kurganets-25 and BMP-T respectively). Fact being mostly autocannons is part of this doctrine of versatility in the battlefield for obvious reasons: cheap equipment.

why even add this specific variant of BMD-4? it’s a copy-paste BMP-3 in all areas where it matters, but reload time for ATGM (10s vs 26s) and that gets it a 9.7 BR…right…

there are many vehicles capable of that unfortunately most of them sit at lower BR but my tank got destroyed by german reserve 150mm indirect fire the other day LOL so i guess you can still use them that way even in higher tiers specially since theres also light vehicles with little to no armor, the biggest problem however is their lack of access to drone which seems to be a mechanic tied to the vehicle itself and not to their type as light tanks from lower br wont get access to drone in higher tiers

This was not the point of my post at all. Other TTs in the game have options for light vehicles with autocannons that could be added to the game. Gaijin has decided to keep adding them to USSR TT.
There are a lot of light vehicles with autocannons in the world that could come to the game besides Russian ones.

Only took them 4 years, 1 month, 23 days since their promise to add a TT one! Albeit an even worse one compared to the event bmd or the premium one! So it’s just a diet bmp 3. 3 years, 10 months, 25 days Since the last TT RU light tank yipee!

But don’t forget! You just have to open your wallet and bing bada bum you have a p2w camo net on your brand new Italian pzh too! It’s a shame these little indie devs (Higher ups) have short memory loss. :(

It’s literally been 4 years, 1 month, 23 days since they promised to add a TT one. “Why do they keep getting more and more?” Well if you include having to wait 1/3 of the game’s lifetime so far to be given a single light tank albeit an even worse version compared to the event one (and premium one) so long ago. Then you would still be wrong.

Cough cough xm800t ruining matchmaking since it’s addition darts vs ww2. case closed also “fox”

You know it’s bad when “researchable” is one of the main selling points…

They fully aknowledge how rare unique TT vehicles have become.

Again this was not the point of what he said, other nations deserve more light vehicles such as the US been stuck with only two Bradleys and both of them are so bad, there’s countless light vehicles with auto cannons that can be added but Gaijin still choose to add more and more to Russia, how many do they have again compared to other nations?
