I don’t find smoke rounds all that useful. I just stopped even trying with them. As they require you to reload and you’d only do that if you fired at something.
This is indeed the case in War Thunder, because the formula algorithm in the game focuses more on speed and armor piercing length, and does not increase the penetration of (DU) ammunition, but decreases it (due to slower muzzle speed), so the L28 is probably better than the L27 in the game
This also means that the DM53/63/73/KE2020NEO K279 type of ammunition is more suitable for the environment and formula of the game than the M829 L27 3BM59 type of DU ammunition
L23 has also wolfram penetrator so it should perform better but L/D 14:1 isn’t brilliant.
I wish the chally DS got the L26 and went up to 10.3 with the other premium mbts. It would be more historically accurate, and would make it fit with more vehicles at that BR for a lineup.
lets be fair, here in Britain we wish for a lot of things but rarely get them… like a functioning SPAA at 10.3…
or a competitive top tier fighter (praise be to Saab and by extension the Gripen)
Funny thing I actually bought this vehicle when Tom (Oxy) said on stream that it was an uparmoured Challenger 1. Instead I got a Challenger 1 Mark 2 with some funny letters and sandbags.
I want my L26 and the maximum amount of additional armour possible for Challenger DS.
did he specify how it was uparmoured…?
only thing i can think of is the ROMOR ERA pack, but I don’t know (I probably should considering I own the DS) if it carries it.
Off the top of my head the Challenger 1s never received any armour upgrades apart from ROMOR kits.
It not having L26 is a Gaijin moment because every Challenger in front line service in Op Desert Storm had L26 specifically to deal with T-72s that it was expected L23 would be unable to deal with.
I am not sure if this is correct but Western ERA seems not to be effective against APFSDS rounds?
Or Chemical rounds which its underperforming
I specifically asked during the one stream and the answer I got was something like “Challenger 1 mark 3 with more armour.” but maybe I don’t remember clearly. I do know that’s the impression I had of it and the disappointment is real.
I think a regular issue with “western” ERA is that its not always “pure” ERA. like the soviet stuff is. But rather a composite and at the moment, a lot of that isnt modeled by Gaijin, they just look at the thickness and assume protection levels based upon that:
(if you want the essay answer Community Bug Reporting System)
Though it is all just straight underperforming as well
I think… (and this is a big " I think")
some of the Challenger 1s got upgraded external armour and others did not for Desert Storm and Gaijin being Gaijin, chose not model that external armour to maintain a chosen BR
So perhaps they left the choice to add additional armour in the future (and thus the comment) but then decided against it after the fact.
Hmm. I have also noticed latest US kinetic rounds are not present in the game: M829A3 (2003) and M829A4 (2014). Supposedly they were designed to overwhelm Russian heavy ERA in mind.
British winrates would go above 5% if they gave Challenger DS a 3mm structural steel sideskirt or 3mm box on the front turret.
And that. Even L27A1 on the Challenger 2s is designed to counter Soviet ERA. But the “ERA Perforation” is simply not modeled and they look only at the size of the shell and note the design or composition. I think L27A1 should be able to reliably pen the ERA on something like the T-80BVM, but in game it can barely scratch it

Yeah, I think the CR1s are gunna be the next target if/when the CR2s ever get fixed
The russians get offended by L27A1 because it scratches their freshly applied paint for the May Day Parade.
Irl of course it goes in one end and out the other.
Yep… But of course, like we saw with MANPADs, if the Russians cant do it then of course the west cant do it
