I currently play WT air on a LG 43 in monitor (4:3 orientation). While I love it I am wondering if my experience would be better with a curved wide screen at least 38 in size. Any guidance would be appreciated.
16:9 is much better for pretty much any game, only reason to use 4:3 nowadays would be to play classic games that were originally formatted in 4:3.
Curved monitors are really a personal preference/choice. I do have one, but decided to get a regular flat panel when I upgraded a couple years ago. If you have never used a curved monitor, I would probably suggest against it. It “warps” your brain+eyes, takes a while to get used to. And really isn’t “necessary” unless you are looking at getting an ULTRA wide monitor (32:9 type aspect ratio.) A normal 16:9 widescreen ratio monitor is just fine being a flat panel. Especially if you do ANYTHING else on your computer, a curved monitor is not great. Even watching movies is bad on a curved monitor because you have a narrow “sweet spot” in distance from the monitor and moving outside of that small zone distorts the view horribly.
Quick question, what GPU do you currently have? And are you planning on upgrading soon?
Because, you have 2 general paths/recommendations depending on what GPU you have or will have. The biggest choice imo is to choose between a 2k or 4k monitor. It is not just about the resolution, but also about the refresh rates. It is MUCH easier and cheaper to get a 2k monitor that can go up to 240 Hz or higher than it is to get a 4k monitor that will even go to 120 Hz.
Personally, I chose a 2k monitor that can do 240 Hz a few years ago to pair with my 3090ti. I could easily use a 4k monitor with my rig, but it would struggle to push 120 Hz with moderate to high graphics settings. I greatly prefer the higher refresh rates with my 2k monitor for “action” game like War Thunder versus the high resolution of a 4k monitor with lower refresh rates.
IF you were to get something crazy like a 4090 or 5090 you could then do 4k at high refresh rates, with high/max settings. But even a 4080 or 5080 will just be “ok” @ 4k resolution and trying to push over 90-120 FPS. (Would have to look at your exact setup to see what would be possible. It all depends on exactly which parts your computer has now, and what you plan to have in the future.)
Everything mostly depends on what GPU you have. Pointless to get an expensive 4k monitor that can push 120 Hz+ if you do not have or plan to get a very good GPU.
48in tv
Sir, you’ll be better served in technical questions by stating your box (PC, Playstation, etc), your box’s specs (CPU, GPU, RAM) and if you pilot in AB, RB, SB.
Because, me being only Sim Air with no enemy markers, I have very specific feedback on monitors starting with:
I moved from a 32" 1080p refresh rate 60hz TV, to a 4K (super excited) at 120 FPS TV, only to discover distant planes appear microscopic in 4K due to War Thunder pixel non-scaling ‘weirdness’ that makes opponents painfully tiny.
End result: I’m back on my 32", 1080p, 60 hz refresh rate TV with better (but still unsatisfactory) enemy spotting results while the 4K TV is up for sale.
Did you try setting the resolution to 2k and trying to push it to hold 120hz without dropping? Since each step in the ‘normal’ resolutions is ~2x more pixels pixels, you would be “sort of” be creating Anti-aliasing by displaying 2k on a 4k monitor. (KIND OF the same thing as “up scaling” with a GPU. IE, a GPU will render 8k frames, divide everything, and display 4k.)
I would suggest giving it a try if you feel like. Secondly, IF you had Anti-aliasing turned on in the settings, it can be quite detrimental to the image quality. 4k doesn’t really need Anti-aliasing because the pixels are so dense already. Also frees up a lot of GPU head room and can help push the FPS up towards that magical 120 FPS number.
Also also, did you have any of the DLSS/AI stuff turned on? That can smudge the images quite a bit too.
Anyway, if you do hook it back up to mess around with it, let me know. There are some other things to try which might help the issues you had with it.
thats an insane monitor aspect ratio to still use, I say while having a couple CRTs within arms reach.
most modern gaming monitors will be better. and 16:9 is always better for gaming as thats what games are built for, other ultrawide ratios can break some other games so its not always practical to stray from the norm.
decent resolution and good latency is the main thing. LCD, IPS or OLED matters less than that. So 1080p and as little advertised latency as possible is perfectly adequate.
higher refresh rates (measured in hertz HZ) than the normal 60hz is also much better as it means more displayed frames, however the practical improvement from 60hz to 120 or beyond is actually not very much at all and is always overhyped.
curved monitors can feel more immersive but it means if you use the screen to also be your TV while sitting somewhere away from your setup its not gonna be so great.
I personally run two flat panel 27inch 144hz 1080p monitors on my PC and thats more than what would be adequate for me.
27" is the sweet spot for playing
I’d be sitting like 3847ft away and could still identify a leopard 1 by it’s a antenna lol
Not when your on Xbox with no graphics options
Biggest visibility gives Extra Ultra Wide, or Ultra wide… So 21:9 and on. 34 inch.
Brother, please believe me when I say I have tried everything meaning, all possible combinations of antialiasing.
My best Air Sim spotting experience is 1080p with Super Sampling and, no other antialiasing.
But, that’s still pretty sketchy.
