BeNeLux Helicopter Techtree

Belgium - Netherlands - Luxembourg

image image image

Hello everyone! Welcome to the official BeNeLux Helicopter Techtree suggestion. This BeNeLux Techtree has been made by the Fan-made BeNeLux Techtree Discord server: https://discord.gg/PEW9bFp

Foreword:

What is the BeNeLux?

BeNeLux stands for Belgium - Netherlands - Luxembourg. It is an official politico-economic union and formal international intergovernmental cooperation of three neighboring states in western Europe.

Why combine the countries into one techtree?

From a historical point of view, Belgium and the Netherlands already have military cooperations. For example, there is a BeNeLux Navy Command, both countries purchased each others military products in the past, and with the Air Force, both the Netherlands and Belgian squadrons take turns protecting the BeNeLux Air Space.

From an ingame point of view the Netherlands and Belgium are two countries that both have lots of very interesting vehicles, but are also both a little lacking in some regards when we look at them from an ingame point of view. To give some examples:

Netherlands: Unique Air Force, Little lacking in Army, Very unique Navy.
Belgium: Unique Air Force, lots of unique Army vehicles, lacking in their Navy.

You can quite easily see why a union of the two countries makes sense. Together both countries add to eachother, Belgium adds to the lacking Dutch army, and the Dutch add to the lacking Belgian Navy.

How about Luxembourg?

Well it is true that Luxembourg does not add anything of value to the BeNeLux techtrees (From an ingame point of view Luxembourg only has a TOW armed Humvee and an armed Police helicopter).
But then again they also wouldn’t make sense in a German or French techtree either. In reality Luxembourg does not have a place in War Thunder. But since the BeNeLux is an official union we decided to include Luxembourg just for the sake of giving them a place ingame.
Their Air Force and Army decals can be added alongside Belgian and Dutch onces.

A quick introduction:

Sadly neither Belgium, the Netherlands or Luxembourg ever made any indigenous helicopters of their own. For some time there was VFW-Fokker (A joint venture between the Dutch Fokker and German Vereinigte Flugtechnische Werke company) who were making helicopter designs, but only one proposed Attack Helicopter ended up being made in an unarmed form. This helicopter, the P277, is present in our tree, but only as an event vehicle.

This means that the rest of the tree is made up of foreign helicopter designs, with the primary Attack Helicopter force being made up of the Dutch AH-64 Apache’s.

Something else we did was make an Naval Helicopter Line. These are helicopters that were used by the Navy and are only armed with Torpedoes and sometimes small machine guns in the doors.

Naval forces in War Thunder can still be expanded more towards the modern age of Naval Warfare, and so we decided to add this Helicopter Line as a potential future thing we could see for Helicopters.
Another option is that these Helicopters could also be added to ships the same way Floatplanes work on ships. In that case the Helicopters in this tree are a simple showcase of what they are like.

So with that out of the way, let’s dive in!

Boeing AH-64D (1st Sale Model)

Description: This specific AH-64D Apache was the very first model shown of for the Dutch Air Force. On the photo above we see it displayed in a hanger with some text on the side of the nose. This specific model in this techtree serves as the simple premium that people can buy to gain faster access to the techtree.

However, whenever I propose specific one-of versions of vehicles I also strongly believe that the model ingame should be a 100% exact copy of the model shown. And incase of this specific one it comes with some weaponry differences compared to the standard AH-64D in Dutch service.

This AH-64D will be an exact copy of the one shown on the photo, and we can see that it’s fitted with two external fuel tanks, and two 4-tube Hellfire missile launchers. And on the wingtips there is no AMASE (Apache Modular Aircraft Survivability Equipment) pod present, so the model proposed here also doesn’t get it. Also just like the base AH-64D variant in use with the Dutch Air Force, this one also is not fitted with the AN/APG-78 Longbow millimeter-wave fire-control radar target acquisition system and the Radar Frequency Interferometer.

All in all this AH-64D is a bit less capable then the base AH-64D variant, and in my eyes that justifies it being a Rank lower and at BR 11.3 instead of 11.7.

VFW-Fokker/Westland P277

image

Description: This is a rather odd one for this techtree, but allow me to explain. This Helicopter was designed by VFW-Fokker and Westland, and one unarmed prototype was made. Now VFW-Fokker is the important bit here, Fokker is a Dutch company ofcourse, and VFW is a German one. VFW-Fokker was a joint venture between the two companies and they developed some interesting things.

The P277 didn’t go any further then the unarmed prototype. And with that it’s a bit odd deciding where the helicopter would end up if added ingame. Because you got a Dutch, German and British company that developed it.
My personal opinion is that all three countries can get it, but only limited to a event vehicle. Maybe squadron could work too. But definetly not a researchable techtree vehicle. So that’s why it’s here in our tree as an event helicopter.

useless, half of them are already french helis anyway and the tiger is better than the apache.

That is a straight up lie:
Only the Dutch SA 3160 Alouette III is partially in-game in the French Helicopter tree, but none of the French variants can carry TOW missiles. This is only 1 out of 12 vehicles in this tech tree proposal.

That is a matter of opinion, but usefullness or surperiority compared to existing vehicles in-game shouldn’t be an indicator if something should be added to the game.

I just thought I leave this here in the comment section. If Gaijin wants to go all fake they can add this one xD

I don’t know why this was made, but this is some sort of joke/mockup of a combat version of the Dutch Alouette III.

Description: This is the totally real attack version of the Dutch Alouette III. The cheap looking cardboard construction of the various weaponry on the helicopter is supposed to look that way to confuse the enemy.

it is, redundancy blocks the path to unique vehicles. There is nothing the benelux tree can provide that the French already has waiting to be implemented in their own tree (yes french choppers first into the french tree, shocking!)

Nowhere is it stated that anyone here is suggesting that, except for you.

So far this has not been the case. The development cycle for the non-3 major nations is just extremely slow, so sometimes it may seem that the addition of a subtree ‘blocks’ the addition of a ‘native’ vehicle, but so far these examples are rare and currently unseen in any helicopter tree.

Furthermore there is more room for vehicles in all helicopter tech trees for more than triple the current amount of helicopters.

The role of the BeNeLux is not to be an assistant to the French tech tree, but to be supplimentative (like any other subtree in War Thunder) and to be a representation of the subtrees’ history of combat vehicles. It may add worse, equal or surperior vehicles compared to the French tech tree, but it’s not meant to be a ‘filler’ inbetween the technological gaps seen in the French tech tree. For some BR’s this could be the case, like for 9.7-11.7 ground, but for most vehicles of the BeNeLux they will be just a subtree.

Personally I’d rather have an independent BeNeLux tech tree, as the BeNeLux has all the vehicles to make that happen for ground, air, helicopters, bluewater and even coastal.

By the way, there are only 3 suggestions for the French Helicopter tree:

There are, of course, a couple non-service models that could be added, like the ones for the export market (like the Eurocopter AS.350 Écureuil and Eurocopter AS.365 Dauphin in the Chinese Tech tree) or prototype vehicles, but these are few in numbers. I suggest you, or someone else, can make more suggestion posts.

there are 5 apaches on your tree (so there’s at most 6 different vehicles, and all of them have french counterparts). also nh90, h145 are from airbus (and have french variants).

it’s just how things should be, you go first with indigenous designs and then you can look at foreign designs

both go together and mean the same in that regard. There’s no point filling unexisting gaps.

no thank you, chopper are already enough of a plague and until gaijin decide you can use chopper for other thing that being a nuisance, there shouldn’t be more than strictly necessary.

Although I would love to see BeNeLux vehicles in-game, I don’t think it’s enough to justify an independent tech tree. However, they could do great as a French sub-tree as they already started doing with their Aviation tree and with the Ground Tree (although way slower).

As for the helicopters, I wouldn’t choose the Apaches, since they are already present in too many trees - perhaps allow the existing ones to have a camos in other nations already present and it will be fine by me. I would rather choose more interesting and unique models, like the Alouette III with TOW missiles.
The naval helicotpers will not suffice in game if the armament is limited only to torpedoes, but they could work as a ship-deployed vehicle as they already included naval scout planes for higher BRs.

Just for the record, this suggestion is for an independent BeNeLux techtree. This is not a French BeNeLux subtree suggestion.
Just because Gaijin decided to unlogically add the BeNeLux to the French tree does not mean that those discussions are relevant to this suggestion.

it won’t happen since it’s already a subtree tho. Although i’d prefer having a swiss subtree in the french TT.

I know this was made before BeNeLux for France, but I want it for France, because Apaches are cool, and that’s my reasoning
