Bay-class Minesweeper, HMCS Thunder (MCB161) (1957)

Description:

HMCS Thunder was the eighteenth out of twenty Bay-class minesweepers built for the Royal Canadian Navy in the early cold war period. Built as the replacement for another Bay-class HMCS Thunder, which was sold to the French. She was named after Thunder Bay, Ontario.

This suggestion is for her fit as she commissioned into the RCN in 1957.

History:

Laid down on the 1st of September 1955 by Port Arthur Shipbuilding Co, Port Arthur, Ontario. She was launched into the bay from which her name was derived on the 27th of October 1956. She was commissioned on the 3rd of October 1957.

She was built out of Mahogany and Aluminum and other non-ferrous materials, as to prevent influence mines detonating on the ship while minesweeping operations were being carried out.

Her career was long but uneventful, as upon her commission she joined the Training Group Pacific, serving as a training and minesweeping vessel in that group throughout her entire commission. She would visit many ports including the US, and Gulf Islands.

Naturally her role would change over time, In 1972 her main armament and minesweeping gear would be removed, then in 1980 they would be plated over and replaced by a deck house as her role had shifted solely to training. She would have four different pendant prefixes throughout her career, depending on what role she was filling;

First she had MCB - Minesweeper Coastal Bay (class)
Then BCCPS - Bay Class Coastal Patrol Ship
When her armament was removed she became PFL - Patrol Escort (small)
And finally she became PB - Patrol Boat.

She would be paid off on the 22nd of August 1997, and placed at Beecher Bay, British Colombia with her sisters, the former HMCS Miramichi and Fundy until at least 2008. They are no-longer there.
