BAe Sea Harrier - Technical data and discussion

So like Phoenix. iirc they’re also TV guidance, so popping smoke should probably obscure them? Pave Tack isn’t TI equipped either

They are TV guided but not in the way you think. The missile has a camera in the nose which sends footage back to the aircraft over data-link. The navigator then manually steers the missile to the target (or more accurately the navigator keeps a crosshairs over the target on the video and the missile steers itself to hit the target)

Moreso a cruise missile than a maverick.

It’ll be funny. also, naval when it gets fixed

ah yes. Trying to think of anything comparable. AR version is self guiding right?

Nice little doco’ about the Falklands war for those interested.

Partially on topic given the SHar took part.

Historigraph does awesome videos

The IWM Air War video on the falklands from my brief recollection was also worth a watch.

Also can recommend Harrier 809 by Rowland White

Yeah that was excellent too

Anyone got any info about the radar not having a pd mode anymore? Double checked and the squadron vehicle sea harrier no longer has it.

The way it’s sounding makes it seem to be an analog to something like AGM-84E SLAM or KH-59 which are both MITL capable

MITL capable missiles/bombs would be a fairly interesting thing to be implemented tbh albeit it could potentially be a pain to balance

Wasnt aware it ever had it. Interesting. When did it have it?

After they fixed it as it used to just have the f5e radar as a place holder. Should have a of mode from what I know as it was meant for deck fights and carrier defence. Just wanted to know if anyone has any documents or information on it so I could do a bug report.

@Gunjob or @Flame2512 might have sources for it

I was thinking there was still something off about the radar because I heard a story of a Shar detecting an Argentine Cruiser at over 100km. I’ll see if I can find where I heard it from.

I dunno.

I really struggle with the SHar’s radar: Even close contacts well visible visually often are not detected by the radar, even under good conditions (ground clutter free)…

The problem with the Shar radars were that it required a lot of tweaking and in flight attention form the pilot all that we don’t have in wt so the performance is lacking. In the Falklands there were even big differences between the deployed squadrons (800,801,809 NAS).
But it really didn’t have any look down capabilities so the lack of a PD mode is completely accurate

The Sea Harrier FRS.1’s radar never had a pulse Doppler mode in real life. I’m also not aware of it ever having had one in game (unless it was a short-lived dev server thing - I’m sure it’s never had PD on the live server).

iirc it did have one on dev during its release but it was very short lived. whether it made it to live i dont know.
