Background History

In 1984, British Aerospace (now BAE Systems) began developing a new, more combat-oriented variant of the proven Hawk trainer aircraft – the Hawk 200. Until then, the Hawk family had been designed primarily as an advanced training aircraft with limited secondary armament. The aim of the new project was to create a light multi-role combat aircraft that could be used in both air-to-air and air-to-ground roles.
The first Hawk 200 demonstrator made its first flight on May 19, 1986, and showed promising performance in terms of agility and flight characteristics.
Despite the loss of the prototype during another test flight, British Aerospace decided to continue. The first pre-production aircraft were produced in 1987. In 1990 the manufacturer recorded its first export success: the Sultanate of Oman ordered twelve Hawk 203s, which were delivered in full by 1993.
The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) is also one of the operators of the Hawk 200 series. It ordered a total of 18 aircraft, consisting of four Hawk 108s and fourteen Hawk 208s, with only Hawk 208s still being in service.

Armament of the Hawk 208

The Malaysian Hawk 208 stands out in comparison to the Indonesian Hawk 209.
