History.
During the two world wars Italy became interested in the field of trucks equipped with guns, given the industry’s chronic inability to supply adequate numbers of tanks for wartime needs. Seeing the good German use of 88-pieces on trucks during the 1940 French campaign in 1941, Ansaldo thought of using Italian cannons for a similar role (as the Italians also did during World War I), and the choice for the weapon to be mounted fell on the mighty Ansaldo 90/53 Model 1939 cannon. The company proposed mounting the cannon on an Alfa Romeo truck, but the Ministry of War approved the project but with a waiver, namely mounting the cannon on top of the mighty Lancia 3Ro truck. On February 6, 1941, the first 90/53 autocannon on Lancia 3Ro was completed and on the following 10 it was presented for firing trials. Thirty such autocannons, which were to serve as antiaircraft and antitank roles, were ordered, and subsequently many more examples were ordered (the largest order consisted of 90 examples with the addition of 96 ammunition trucks and 24 parts carriers).
Several examples built ended up fighting in North Africa against Anglo-American troops, and one example was even found almost intact by Allied forces, and the example survives to this day in North America.
Armaments and propulsion.
The vehicle was armed with a 90/53 Model 1939 cannon, the second most produced cannon in Italy during World War II, with a 30-round capacity and a shield similar to that mounted on the 90/53 autocannon on Breda 52. The vehicle also had the anti-aircraft ammunition timing device and was also equipped with jacks to anchor the vehicle to the ground.
As an engine, the vehicle was powered by a Lancia Tipo 102 diesel engine, 5 cylinders with 93 hp of power output, which allowed the vehicle to reach 45 mph.
