History.
The Reggiane 2002 was one of the main fighters and fighter-bombers of the Regia Aeronautica: designed in the late 1930s and built from 1940 onwards, this aircraft was an evolution of the Reggiane 2001 and was primarily deployed with units of the Regia Aeronautica until the end of the Second World War.
One of the most famous units to use the Reggiane 2002 was the 102nd Group, specifically the 239th Squadron, which employed these aircraft to great effect (at the cost of heavy losses) in ground attack and naval bombardment missions.
With the events of the war and the formation of the Southern Kingdom’s Co-belligerent Air Force, the 102nd Group, along with the entire wing to which it belonged, remained intact and was immediately deployed in the war of liberation alongside the Allies, including some of the remaining Reggiane 2002s.
And in both parts of the 102nd Group’s history, its aircraft were personalised by the crews.
The decal.
On the aircraft’s left fin, the word “Ariete” (“Ram”) appears, with the letters written at an angle and parts of the wings fluttering towards the tail. The “A” is preceded by a ram’s head pointing towards the fuselage of the aircraft, tilted together with the lettering by approximately 40°–45° downwards. The lettering was black, with the fluttering wings and the ram’s head also white.
