I was wondering if, like with tanks, bringing less ammunition in naval battles actually provides a benefit to survivability.
I remember seeing empty racks in the X-ray view of my battleships when carrying less ammo, but what about Coastal vessels?
For example, I tried drastically reducing the ammo count on my R-301 and conducted a “test flight”. When I enabled X-ray mode, all the racks still appeared full. So, is there any point in risking running out of ammo if it doesn’t actually improve survivability?
If anyone has insight on this, I’d appreciate it. @Smin1080p_WT, if you have an official answer to share, that would be great as well!
I’ve always wondered this as well. Would be interesting to know if it has any meaningful affect or not.
For BBs that i rarely if ever go through most of my ammo, i just favour less. But for Light Cruisers where I have actually run o ut of ammo before, I just take as much as I can.
I think the game models all the magazines as whole compartment hit boxes. As in it applies accumulated damage and detonation RNG for each hit. Because when you land hits on the mag and shell rooms, they don’t blow even if the red splotch is right on a red box.
Even “some” ammo is likely catastrophic when calculated against ship hull and crew HPs. So… I just run full ammo because running out is annoying and one shot ammo racks just come anyway.
It iirc depends per ship as it’s doable for many while others not.
I know that one destroyer can carry only 1800 shells & have the other 7200 shells missing resulting in all magazines being empty, making it one of the hardest ships to sink via ammunition explosion.
I guess that’s what the devs get for not modelling those shell feeding systems properly hah hah hah.
But the same can be said for smaller vessels as well, but it’ll be a bit of testing between ships to see.
And hull torpedo ordnance? Some WW1 BB / BC have hull torpedo rooms. So far I always empty them, since its unlikely there are good opportunities to use them. Out of fear of ammo detonations when a shell splashes nearby or hits the compartment.
Is that fear justified? Is it possible hull torpedo ordnance lights off and sinks the ship?
Torpedoes do detonate - jsut had one do so on a Litchfield when I hit it with a bomb - at least that’s what hte message said, and it definitely “went black” - dunno how much damage they do tho.
