In the early 1970’s in the ongoing VFX program McDonnell Douglass proposed a unique concept taking on the F15 Eagle air superiority fighter, meant to challenge the US Navy’s F14 Tomcat! A supposedly cheaper faster and lighter alternative to the Tomcat! This designation/concept led to a prototype no other than the so called F15 N Sea Eagle, capable of taking AIM 54 Phoenixes into battle along with AIM 7 Sparrows and AIM 9 Sidewinders. Furthermore the Sea Eagle was fitted with an AN/APG 63 radar system(a further developed version of the AN/AWG 9 upgraded in association with Hughes Aircraft Company) to integrate it for the use of Phoenixes ,which unfortunately came with a weight penalty of around 4.5 tons or 10000 lbs(different sources here)(weight on top of a regular F15 A), ultimately reducing the aircrafts T/W ratio. Ultimately being able to fit the AIM 54’s was enough for it to be awarded a new title called F-15N-PHX Some sources provide arrangements for the other possible details of the prototype like foldable wings or upgraded landing gears.The project was ultimately rejected upon reviewal by the US Congress, however it could make for a very nice and unique prototype/event vehicle in game!
