Amx-30 series 20mm autocannon

Curious about the ammunition that it can fire. Does it only fire hvap and HE ammo in real life or could it also fire apds ammunition?

Also wondering why that 20mm autocannon wasn’t passed down to Leclerc designs.

pretty sure it could also fire regular ap (which would be an improvement lol)

probably to reduce the cost of the tank, the leclerc was and is pretty expensive (15 million USD in 1993)

Found the bug report for the ammunition which was published 8 months ago

What makes it so expensive? Is it electronics or maybe the build quality?

the auto-loader and the thermals mainly, but also the cost of labor which is pretty high in France

Understandable

Not enough were built to make economies of scale.
As for the autocanon, it was probably ditched for both weight, complexity, and space saving reasons, as well as it not being all that useful in the expected role of a last gen Cold War MBT.
Still it retained the 12.7, so they did value a powerful coaxial, but most likely the cost to performance ratio of the 20mm wasn’t worth it.

Just played the amx-10p with apds and it was AWFUL… you see nothing but heavy targets, I understand that at 5.3-7.3 br range it’s rare to see lightly armored vehicles since everyone gets attracted by heavy armor.

Back to topic, I don’t think it would hurt to give the amx-30, 32 and 40 the apds belt since amx-10p uses the same autocannon as in mentioned vehicles. I would assume that at 8.0 and onward the situation would be the same: nothing but armored tanks, but lightly armored vehicles would less rare. Sure, it’s going to be like turm III, but you won’t have the stabilizer and the 5sec reload.
