Alternatives to headphones

Is it the pressure of the headphones on your skull or the sound?

I’ve got sensory overload issues (most of my senses are “turned up” too much) and I use the Audio-Technica ATH-R70x because it’s open-ear and has a quiet top end. The open-ear speakers help to stop noise isolation causing me headaches, and as per Crinacle (and my own experience) they’ve got a really quiet upper end if high pitched sounds are the issue for you. They are pricey, but for me it was the cheapest I could find that had a good enough profile. There are some other headphones similar to the one’s I’ve got that are more budget-friendly, though (the ATH-M40x and ATH-M30x). Note, I’m not an Audio-Technica salesperson or anything, I just really like my headphones lol.

I use a set of “Skull Candy” earbuds. Good bass and directionality. I don’t like the pressure and stuffiness on the ears of headphones, and my kids would laugh at me.
If that doesn’t work, I hear wallhacks are a good replacement for hearing (I’m KIDDING DON’T BAN ME BRO!)

Thank You for All the responses! I will try the cushion/ hoodie first, after my headache will pass. (Once it starts, it will hurt for at least a day :c)

I use an ifi iDSD signature DAC/AMP paired with a pair of FiiO FH7 in-ear monitors. You can use either Dolby or DTS software to simulate 7.1 sound.

You don’t need all of that, but some in-ear monitors will help reduce fatigue, and you can get some high-quality sound from them. Different ear tips are available to further customize the sound profile.

Btw was it the pressure or the sound?

I use a Creative Sound Blaster Katana soundbar since 2017 when I finished building my PC. Lately I’ve also been trying to play with heaphones, wired or wireless, cause unfortunately Gaijin updated sounds in the game a few years ago and I stopped hearing the bomb whistle in Arcade Ground Battles on my soundbar, I also decided to try using headphones cause I kept watching Youtubers knowing where enemy tanks were and sometimes which type/model just by their engine sound cause they were using headphones. With the soundbar you can still tell that an enemy is close by but it’s not as clear where it really is as with the headphones.
I really don’t enjoy to play with headphones for long periods of time with the kind of sounds that we have in this game but unfortunately Gaijin decided to give a huge advantage to those that use it and to make it worse they even gave the option to decrease other sounds like your own engine sound.
Still, between playing with a huge advantage or saving my hearing, I prefer the second option.

Seems to be mostly pressure. After I wore a hoodie I managed to last 2 hours, then the pain started again, so i presume the sound itself is also a factor in this.

Yeah. Without headphones I often end up in panic mode cause i hear billion of noises, and all of them come from the front. :P

You wanna get some out-board speakers then, what they’re mentioning is another issue entirely.

Even check those headphones that don’t go over the head, but around the back. Those sports ones lol.

I’ve been playing for months with no sound due to other reasons.

I’d say try to see if there are any headphone pad mount things (idk how to describe them really). I haven’t ever had many problems with the normal headphone mount type, but see if there are some adapters you can buy on amazon to make the headphone rest on the top of your head more. As for the sound, I like to look at Crinacle’s (youtuber known for reviewing IEMs, earphones, and headphones) website for sound profiles of the headphones/earphones I buy.

Dang they look like cool headphones those mid ones… I’d break them fast but damn they look like a good design.

They’re actually the ATH-R70x (the one’s I’ve got), they’ve been really durable so far and I’ve had them for a little over a year I think. The ATH-AD500X have the same type of headphone mount, they’re a lot cheaper (now, at least) at $79.99 on amazon right now. The open-ear/open-air speakers are probably the best part when it comes to stopping headaches, since there’s no noise cancelling or anything (which for me causes headaches sometimes).

lol that’s what made my eyes water, the price. xD

Yeah, lol. I usually spend a lot on headphones so that they don’t bug me or give me too much sensory overload, and then try to keep them forever.

I remember one time the sound randomly swiched left to right on me mid-match, made it really confusing.

I am also quite picky regarding headphone comfort.
I can’t stand ordinary leather earpads that are common nowadays for many headphones, some headphones, I tried were very uncomfortable for me (the bridge at the top of the head often caused me significant pain with many headphones I tried). Also clamping force can be lowered by seating heaphones on something wider than your head overnight to loosen them up.
I tried several inear headphones as well, but those weren’t comfortable for me either.

It got to the point where I am very averse to having to change headphones.
The only headphones I can recommend in good conscience are Sennheiser ones with velour cushioning. Those are only ones I can wear for longer periods of time.

Check drop.com for models PC37X and PC38X

There are other brands like AKG or Philips that have some headphones that I found comfortable, but I don’t remember models. Even brands that have some comfortable models can have different uncomorftable ones, so you have to really try it for yourself.

It is best if you are able to visit some shop, where you can try on many models on your head.
