From what I can tell its related to DX12. I have a similar issue where in DX12 if I alt tab the game stay running but it looks frozen and then it will all of a sudden catch up to where it should be. I managed to cause a hard crash by alt tabbing rapidly.
On DX11 no such issue.
I physically cannot make it happen on DX11, on DX12 I can essentially make the issue happen on command.
I am currently testing other DX12 games and having no such issues so it is totally related to Warthunder and therefore it is on Gaijins end.
Just to test it to the extreme and I went around in multiple games spamming alt tab as fast as I could, even in some cases with windows across monitors at different refresh rates and resolutions just to make it more awkward, all were DX12 games and I even made sure they were games that would push my GPU to its limit and I got nothing.
This is a WT issue.
I even went to the extreme of tabbing between separate games that both were running in DX12 and nothing would happen.
Fixed Issues and Improvements
Intermittent system or application crash may be observed while pressing Alt-Tab during gameplay on some AMD Radeon™ Graphics Products such as the Radeon™ RX 6000 Series.
Same issue. Me and my friends also suffered from this issue for over a year. Someone mentioned DX12 or Windows 11. But I’m using DX11 and Windows 10. Also, I reinstall the Windows 10 but the issue still exists. My specs are 7800X3D 4070ti 32G RAM Windows10. But my friend’s specs are pretty different.
I might have the solution for some of you as the issue disappeared for me.
It’s HDR! (at least for me)
try the following options:
enable HDR in War Thunder (Options > Graphics, way at the bottom) - that did it for me.
since the issue seems to be HDR, the next option might work as well, but that’s just my guess
disable Auto-HDR in Windows 11 (Windows-Button + I to open up the settings and simply type HDR in the search bar. head into the graphics settings and turn off Auto-HDR)
Strangely enough, it often freezes when I do alt-tab while loading.
Whether it is the loading screen before the match starts, or in the middle of loading the terrain in the back right after the battle starts, etc.
I wonder if this has something to do with it.
Oh yeah, not only it freezes the game and had to “restart the drivers” it seems, it also makes the user-made skins pitch black for the entire match. In-game skins however dosen’t go pitch black, only user-made skins (like from wt.live) do
