Hello everyone! I would like to suggest the Algerian BTR-80 upgraded with Barq (Kornet) anti-tank guided missiles, a modernized wheeled APC developed by Algeria’s ERMA (Automotive Equipment Repair Establishment) in Dar El Beida. This vehicle combines the robust Soviet BTR-80 chassis with advanced firepower and electro-optical technology, providing the Algerian army (ANP) with a cost-effective yet highly capable mobile anti-armor platform.
History

The BTR-80 has been a staple of Algerian mechanized infantry formations for decades. In an effort to keep the platform relevant in modern combat, Algeria undertook a significant upgrade program spearheaded by ERMA Dar El Beida, the entity responsible for refurbishing and modernizing the ANP’s wheeled vehicle fleet.
The transformation primarily focused on the turret. It was completely redesigned and outfitted with an advanced electro-optical system for day/night operations, a modern fire control and targeting suite, and two Kornet missile launch tubes, all while retaining the vehicle’s original 14.5mm KPVT heavy machine gun.
This upgrade is a continuation of prior Algerian innovation: ERMA had previously developed and mass-produced a similar turret equipped with four Kornet missiles for upgraded BTR-60s, which entered service in 2016. These modernization efforts are part of a broader Algerian doctrine of breathing new life into older platforms by outfitting them with powerful new technology.
Specifications
Mobility:
- Engine: KamAZ-7403 diesel engine
- Horsepower: 260 hp
- Top Speed: 90 km/h (road), 9 km/h (water)
- Drive: 8×8 wheeled
- Amphibious: Yes
Armament:

The most significant transformation of this Algerian BTR-80 upgrade lies in its enhanced firepower. While the vehicle retains its original 14.5 mm KPVT heavy machine gun and 7.62 mm PKT coaxial machine gun, it is now equipped with two 9M133 Kornet-E anti-tank guided missile launchers, mounted externally on either side of the redesigned turret.
Notably, these Kornet missiles are locally produced under license in Algeria, where they are designated as “Barq” (Lightning).
- Primary Weapon: 14.5 mm KPVT heavy machine gun
- Secondary Weapon: 7.62 mm PKT coaxial machine gun
- Missiles: 2× Barq (9M133 Kornet)
- Penetration: ~1,100–1,200 mm behind ERA
- Range: 5.5 km (day), ~3.5 km (night)
- Mounting: Two launchers on top of the turret
Optics & Targeting:
the PASEO system supports a hunter-killer mode, allowing simultaneous independent target acquisition and engagement by the commander and gunner. It features an integrated laser rangefinder and automatic target tracking, enabling precise long-range strikes even while on the move. Algeria could have partnered with German firms for local production or licensed manufacturing of such systems.
- Electro-Optical Suite: PASEO electro-optical system
- Detection Range (vehicle): ~8 km
- Identification Range (person): ~950 m
- Thermal Detection (person): ~5.3 km
- Laser Rangefinder: Integrated, 7 km
- Display: Output shown to gunner and commander
- Panoramic field of view: n x 360°
- Cooled thermal imager: 3-5 µm

Not the best at giving such recommendations, but I believe this vehicle would best fit as a premium/event vehicle in the USSR/Russian ground forces tree (or, if it happens someday, the Arab League tech tree). And if added to the- russian tech tree, ideally placed around BR 10.7, just after the 2S25M Sprut. It complements the Sprut’s light armor and firepower with wheeled speed and missile capability, and it aligns perfectly with the doctrine, technology, and playstyle of the Soviet/Russian lineup.
Although the vehicle uses some imported components (such as optics), it would be inappropriate and misleading to place it in the french tech tree. The platform is fully Soviet in origin, the missiles are Russian-designed (and locally produced under license), and Algeria operates nearly all of its armored and mechanized forces using Russian or Soviet equipment.
Moreover, considering Algeria’s history and defense policies, placing this vehicle in the French tree would come off as disrespectful. Algeria has built its military identity on strong cooperation with the “Eastern Bloc”, not France which it fought against for independence. Including an Algerian-modified Soviet vehicle in the French line would not only misrepresent its origins, but could also be seen as disregarding that reality entirely.
