Description: The AR51 Matta is an Italian off-road made by the company Alfa Romeo. In the early 1950s, the Italian army started a competition to replace the old Jeep, which equipped various motorized regiments. Two companies took part in the competition: Fiat with the Campagnola and Alfa Romeo with the 1900M, called Matta (from the Italian, crazy). After various trials in 1951, some mechanical issues regarding the fuel and the gears were reported, and they were quickly resolved in the same year. It was realized as a classic off-road vehicle with a steel frame and a crossbar. It was equipped with a water-cooled four-cylinder Series 1307 engine with a total of 65 horsepower. Thanks to its good characteristics, it was able to climb over 50° terrain, and it has a fording capability of 70 cm. The engine also had a low consumption of fuel, with only 15 L for 100 km. It’s fuel tank was able to store up to 50 liters of fuel, so that would mean that the car would have been able to travel over 300 km without refueling. The traction system has a total of four manual gears with a maximum speed of 105 km/h forward. For economical reasons, the competition was won by the Campagnola, but the Italian army still placed an order of 1281 1900M for its motorized units and for the Carabinieri. The first preseries unit was made in 1952, and serial production continued until 1954. During the Italian army service, the 1900M was tested with various weapons and configurations, such as the SS10 anty tank missile and the M40A1 recoiless rifle. From the sixties to the seventies, the 1900M would have been eventually replaced by the Fiat AR59 and AR76. It was also extensively used by a lot of privates who still use it to this day.
Why it should be in the game: it could give to the Italian tt a new light tank that could be placed in the tank destroyer line alongside the AR59 before the M113. Or it could be used as an event veichle.
