given that you somehow assume that the pilot in a plane with terrible visibility would know when the F18 launched a low smoke missile and flare it

Pay attention to the last line, it wasn’t just aim-9p. Still in the system. Why do you think they had to enhance flare resistance in the later 9x’s?
