I think a lot of people would be surprised just how much of the USAs’ “modern” arsenal is just upcycled 70/80s tech, which is not a bad thing on it’s own, having a large stockpile of cheaper, less capable weapons to deal with the “softer” lower value targets after your expensive high end stuff has cracked the tough nuts is smart. The problem is that the military industrial complex sells it (and charges for it) as bleeding edge tech, so not only is a lot of the USA mainline weaponry less capable then it should be, it’s not actually much cheaper then the stuff other nations produce. And I’m referring to other WESTERN nations here, not Russia or China, before anybody starts ranting at me about that.
I think ASRAMM costs about $300k to $400k while AIM-9X is about $400k to $500K for the USA domestic market and double for export. IRIS-T is about the same as the domestic USA AIM-9X price.
