so let me get this straight. you put the F14D in the game and thats awesome but that model was designed to be capable of using aim 120’s and you decided not to put them in. ok fair they never actually got the chance to use them on that airframe. oh whats that? theres an F4 phantom that can use aim 120s? ok.
WHY THE EVER LOVING FUCK CAN A PLANE THAT WAS NEVER DESIGNED FOR THAT SYSTEM USE THEM???
Countries operating old Gen 3-4 Fox-1 aircraft as main air defense aircraft and waiting for modern Gen 4-4.5 used to upgrade their older jets extensively to give them Fox-3 capability as intermediate measure to keep them effective in their later stage of service.
So e.g. Germany and Greece upgraded their old F-4’s, Sweden their JA37, but the US didn’t also upgrade their F-14’s similarly.
Simple as that.
(Well, the politics etc. behind this all is not as simple, but that what it boils down to.)
Well it was all about money and aging plane.
And small political reason of some country collapsing
US only tested 120’s on F14, but never truly adoptet em on use, since plane was aging, and would cost 2 much to upgrade electronics.
And why would they, F18 was on the way, F15’s were more common in use, and still had value of life.
Also - but this solely my own personal musings - the Tomcats still had their AIM-54 for longer reach if really needed, and were at that stage used more in a strike role.
With that changed role, which in turn was probably based on new requirements and threats after the end of the Cold War and the conflicts after it, long distance fleet defense seemed to have been less prioritized, and while USAF Eagles downed almost three dozen aircraft in Desert Storm, USN Tomcats only got into one situation where they downed a helicopter.
Or to put it in another way: Pete “Maverick” Mitchell killed as many enemy aircraft in Tomcats over two Top Gun movies as all US Navy Tomcats together over their whole career.
