Aim 120 c5 and c7 question

Evening everyone,

Just a quick question,

Aren’t the Aim-120 c-5 and c-7 supposed to be smokeless?

Thanks.

Even 120A should

Sorry guys, just read other articles about this issue. Let’s keep this thread open to discuss this and the aim54c being smokeless, thanks.

I dont think so

I dont think the motor implicity changed. It just got bigger on the C5

And it got reduced smoke

Which would require a different propellent.

Not an issue for a country with a defense budget like the us

gaijin frankly doesn’t care

Same with the 54c

Wasnt talking about money. If the only difference (that I am aware off) between A/B and C+ is that C5 got an expanded motor. Then they all likely use the same propellent. Ergo, A/B & C5/C7 should probably all be smokeless.

I also recall seeing something somewhere about A/B being reduced smoke as well.

For the a and b the sources are mixed. To hard to tell

While the exact formulation of the motor is classified, they have all been “smokeless” formulations since inception as improving over the AIM-7 was the intent

That said, a smokeless motor is much like a silencer on a firearm. They reduce, but do not totally eliminate signature.

Yeah. but until such time we get decent contrail modeling. There shouldnt be any difference between Aim-9M and AMRAAM from what ive read.

Reduce overall and remove with some conditions

Wouldn’t disagree with that.

I’d settle for better seeker modeling and performance and leave the plume/trail though.

Every AMRAAM should be smokeless. GunJob said that it might be for balance
