It has to be a Player controlled vessel from my understanding of the wording on the Task.

If that’s player controlled, maybe it has to be Bluewater and not a coastal boat.

Did they not change it some time ago that bots in naval counted for battle pass tasks?

it is unfortunately only on real people that it works
They often forget to flip whatever toggle it is on battlepass tasks to make the bots count. Just have to roll with it, kill a human instead.
I am aware but as of right now it still just Players hence my original comment as if it did include bots it would state as much in the requirements of the task.

What I don’t get is why that (and sadly most other tasks that can be done with aircraft) can not be completed in sim…

This isn’t true. All daily and special tasks in the naval modes since early 2025 have treated bots as players, and always only say “players.” None of them say “bots” as well, because of the change Silent Tracker mentioned.
Battle pass tasks are currently hit and miss. Sometimes they remember to hit the “bot toggle” on the task, sometimes (as in this case) they forget. Regardless they also always only say “players.”

As far as I am aware, non player-controlled vehicles are simply referred to as “targets”
For example:
and “player vehicles” definitely sounds like player-controlled vehicles.

As of January, 2025, that is no longer the case for naval.

gaijin probably didnt do it (or forgot) because its kinda not a naval objective since you complete it in a plane not a boat
The question is if they fixed the task or just changed the verbiage.
