So I recently purchased the Aerox 5 Wireless Mouse and when trying to set up the side keys to be radar target lock etc. it was setting them as f1, f2, and f3, so I went into the SteelSeries control software and changed the side buttons to be MB 6, 7, and 8.
Then when going back into War Thunder and trying to assign the side keys again it now doesn’t recognize them as an input (not recognizing MB 6-8 when pressed).
Does War Thunder not have support for any extra mouse button past MB 4/5?
did you set them up using the controls menu?

and use key combinations such as… idk ‘[’+‘]’ or ‘/’+‘#’ so they dont conflict with your other controls
The top button is an up-and-down switch; below it is mb 4 and 5. The switch is mb 6 and 7 and the front button is MB 8
When I bought the mouse these were set up as f1 f2 and f3 respectively, as I had already been using f1-3 as keybinds for something else I wanted these new buttons to be there on their own. So I changed them from f1-3 to mb6-8.
But when I go to change the key binds in War Thunder there is no response when pressed
Should I just set them up as something like Ctrl + F1
yes you can use key combos as replacements, they should work. make sure they dont conflict with anything else though like in-game keys NOR anything like Ctrl+shift+esc or Alt+F4 lol
