Something I’ve found in other games like Minecraft, Rocket League or Euro Truck Simulator 2 is an option to add a maximum FPS limit. This is already somewhat possible in War Thunder via third party software like Nvidia Control Panel, MSI Afterburner and others. An option to limit the FPS ingame, be it in the form of a sliding bar like in Minecraft or a dropdown menu with a selection of various FPS limits like in Rocket League would be a nice quality of life addition for those who have powerful hardware, but don’t want it to always go full throttle.
Overall I would prefer a sliding bar, but either User interface would have the same “behind the scenes” implementation in the form of a selection of FPS limits, ideally ranging from 30FPS to maybe 180 or 240FPS and anything above that would then be uncapped/unlimited in the sense that no limit will be applied if the User chooses so.
Here are pictures of the example games listed up above
This is the sliding Bar from Minecraft Bedrock Edition, ranging from 30FPS to 60FPS (in Steps of 5FPS) and if one were to slide one section further it would be uncapped.
Here is the sliding Bar from Minecraft Java Edition. It offers a lot more “Checkpoints”, so to speak, ranging from 10FPS to 250 in steps of 10FPS, with anything exceeding that being uncapped.
Lastly this is the dropdown menu as can be found in Rocket League. It ranges from 30FPS all the way up to 360FPS in irregular steps. Again, the last option after the maximum limit of 360FPS would be uncapped.
As previously said, this wouldn’t be anything more than a nice quality of life additions as it would simplify the process to setting up a FPS limit
I would add to this a second frame rate limit – one for the hangar. IMO, there’s really no need for 100+ fps just in the hangar scene. Unnecessary waste of power and generating heat.
There could be a minimum FPS for hangar so the game still looks good. e.g. 30 fps should be fine for the “slow moving” scenes of hangar.
Edit: This would be optional… so if you want 100+ fps in the hangar you can still get it.
So it could be a similar slider as described in the original post, or just some preset values … e.g. 30, 45, 60, 75, 100, not limited.
(or some common refresh rates)
That is true, but it would just be a lot more convenient for the option to be in the game itself instead of having to fiddle with third-party software.
The Hangar in my game appears to be limiting the monitor’s default refresh rate. When I play on my laptop, it runs at 144 FPS, but when I connect my hub with multiple screens, the Hangar is capped at 60 FPS.
In contrast, during actual gameplay, the frame rate soars well above 160 FPS, sometimes reaching 380 FPS.
While I understand that the Hangar might have lower FPS by design, it would be beneficial to have the ability to customize FPS settings for different scenarios.
For instance, we could set the Hangar to run at just 15 FPS, as higher rates may not be necessary in this environment. Additionally, having the option to cap in-game FPS at 40 could significantly extend battery life when playing on an unplugged laptop. PS: It's not crucial for the game to automatically detect whether the device is plugged in or not, but having these options available in a settings menu would be appreciated.
For desktop users, the ability to limit FPS could benefit players with less powerful systems. As an added bonus, it would help conserve energy, contributing to environmental sustainability.
