A30 Challenger I (10th Polish)

General Description & History:
image

The A30 Challenger I was a British tank developed during World War II as a cruiser variant based on the Cromwell chassis. It was equipped with a powerful 17-pounder anti-tank gun, intended to enhance firepower against increasingly armored German tanks, such as the Panther and Tiger.

To accommodate the 17-pounder, the A30 Challenger I featured a modified Cromwell chassis, which included a new turret and a lengthened hull. While these changes improved its firepower, they also increased the tank’s overall size and weight, resulting in reduced speed and maneuverability compared to the Cromwell.

The A30 Challenger I often operated alongside Cromwell tanks in armored units, but its impact during the war was limited by its relatively low production numbers, around 200 units, and its late introduction. Additionally, its larger size and high silhouette made it a more vulnerable target for enemy forces. Despite its limited success, the A30 Challenger I was eventually outpaced by other 17-Pdr tanks like the Sherman Firefly.

In November 1944, Polish armored units received A30 Challenger I tanks to bolster their capabilities, equipping one platoon in each squadron with these long-range, 17-pounder armed vehicles. The Polish 10th Mounted Rifles of the 3rd Brigade utilized them in Holland, and the 1st Polish Armoured Division received eight A30 Challenger I tanks in early April 1945, which they maintained until the end of World War II.

Role in game:
This vehicle is identical to the in game A30 Challenger with the exception of the track add-on armour. This would be a unique modification, and would make an excellent 5.3 premium tank in the British tree. Much like the Polish Firefly also in game, though if a Polish or Visegrád tree ever get added it could also go there.

+1 for more Polish Armed Forces in the West units, though I still would prefer to see an independent Polish TT.

That’s some good applique coverage!

Is there a way to identify if this is a ‘stage II’, with the 100mm turret cheeks and front armor, if the cheeks and front are covered in track?

I’d have to dig into the sources for Polish A30’s again and see which T numbers they received. If we know exactly which numbers they have it can easily be done.

For example this A30 Challenger served with the Polish 1st Armoured Division and is T271940, originally it served with The Kings Royal Hussars. So the one in this image is actually one of the earlier A30’s with the 63.5mm cast mantlet (picture used is different to the one suggested and is an example only).

Source given to me by SkylineR on Tank Encyclopedia discord (some of it might not be 100% accurate I can’t read Polish and had to use Google translate):

Early-Production Challengers (2.5 Inch/63.5mm Cast Mantlet) received in August 1944:

  • T271910
  • T271912

Early-Production Challenger (received unknown date, transferred from British unit):

  • T271940 (ex-The Kings Royal Hussars)

Mid-Production Challengers (as in-game) received in November 1944:

  • T271947
  • T271957
  • T271962
  • T271963
  • T271969
  • T271971
  • T271972
  • T271976

In June 1945 they received 5 additional vehicles which were previously with Czechoslovak Independent Armored Brigade. Some of these were later production vehicles from photographical evidence. So it’s unlikely that the A30 Challenger in my suggestion is a Stage I variant.

Late-Production Challenger (with 1 inch applique, potentially ex-CIAB):
