Yeah the debate is however how much weight it had in the final decision. Was it a side benefit for a deemed necessary bombing or was it the reason it was decided apon considering there was belief Japan was close to surrender.

See that Japan only “unconditionally surrendered” after the US gave them the condition that the emperor wouldn’t be charged for war crimes (and the committee had known that such a condition was all that was needed to get a surrender), I’d say it’s pretty clear that the bombs weren’t that much of a factor.

Yeah for Japan to surrender it seems time would have had the same result.

The debate I was referring to was regarding the Americans and them deciding if they should drop or not and what was the deciding factor.

You’ve misinterpreted the conversation. Neither of us are commenting an opinion on the dropping of the bomb. Merely discussing the politics that were involved and not widely known or discussed.
