A-72 Mobile SAM

Introduction.

Well, finding documents for this vehicle is very difficult, Vietnam is usually very secretive about the weapons purchased and also the weapons developed domestically, the information tends to be only small and quite random disclosures in the documents. But basically, I think the summary information below is enough.

History.

Spoiler

The first platforms of A-72 Mobile SAM were developed in 1996. At that time, the Ministry of Defense assigned the task to the Academy of Military Science and Technology improving the 37mm anti-aircraft artillery system. Project improving the 37mm anti-aircraft artillery system successfully tested in 1999, the key achievements of this project are the command mobile system and thermal imaging equipment.

From 1991-2011, due to changes in air attack tactics and the development of low-altitude air defense systems such as Poprad,…. Sometime between 2010-2020, inheriting previous projects, as well as international obligations, Air Defense - Air Force (Vietnam People’s Army) and Academy of Military Science and Technology started project A-72 Mobile SAM, this project is divided into two phases:

  • Phases 1: Research and manufacture of fire tower for A-72 missile (a.k.a Strela-2) and day and night photoelectric observation system.
  • Phases 2: Integrated line of sight stabilization system, can fire while moving (less than 20km/h), new TVD replacement without cooling. Integration with command mobile system.

The system was tested in test firing around 2018 and launched in the media in 2019.

It is still under further development, it is notably being developed to be integrated into armored vehicles and accompanied by anti-aircraft guns.

Spoiler

I think it should be ranked 9.3-9.5 in the USSR tech tree, regardless of whether it uses gen 3 TVD, both missile models on it are just short-range and light missiles (Igla-S also only have a range is 6km). Its strengths will probably be its maneuverability and relatively small size (Compared to the container truck at 11.7).
