A-5 Vigilante Discussion

A-5 Vigilante, where is it? It has been awhile since it got requested like 2 or 3 years ago. Wondering if the Devs actually thought of putting it in the American Aviation Tree. (And also the american wheeled vehicles like LAVs, Strykers and Cadillac Cage Commandos)

Just some of my favorite A-5 photos to go along with the post

I haven’t seen a suggestion for it

The A-5 has bee discussed on forums but there hasn’t been a suggestion thread for it on the new forum.

Aside from the Bullpups it would be little more than a fast dumb bomber as its conventional role was very limited and didn’t last long enough to see more advanced missiles. I don’t think it would be as great as some people think, but I still believe it should be added at some point and I’m actually surprised there is no active suggestion yet.

One store that is often forgotten is a unique weapons bay refuelling pod. Pointless in the game but an interesting proposal Irl.

There was a suggestion for the A-5B on the old forum that had been passed to devs 2 years ago:

I really love the vigilante; it’s the most beautiful aircraft I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately in War Thunder’s environment, its utility is very limited, unless Gaijin decides to make it a nuclear bomber.

i dont think it got carried over then

Well a similar plane is in WT and its the Canberra which has no guns but have bombs (the gray one to be specific)

To be honest, as much as I want to see it in game (whether I’d ever get round to playing it, idk), I can’t see it coming. At the minute Air is a very hostile mode for large strike/bomber type aircraft, and it probably wouldn’t be lots of use in Ground thanks to the lack of precision ordnance.

Carpet Bombing and they added the canberra that has no guns

Vigilante vs Canberra, not as close as they first appear.

The A-5 is 200mph faster at sea level (but less so with external stores), and way more at high altitude. That speed alone means the A-5 will sit at a higher BR where it will face missiles on a regular basis. It’s not just about what the vehicle can do, but also what the enemy can do to stop you.

Canberra B.2/B-57A were added long ago, when the “standard” for top tier jets in terms of performance was much lower. Even then, they were unable to outrun anything at their BR, much less anything they might see in an uptier.

Alright who would in the right mind play it on AB? Grind it and just use it in GB

not even close the a-5 can go mach 2

Like any bomber/attacker, especially unarmed ones, it can successful with a heavy slice of luck on your side.

Unfortunately Mach 2 up high isn’t so much a life saver in a missile environment, but Mach 1 on the deck can be a bigger challenge to counter and is why Irl most bombers switched from hi-hi-hi to hi-lo-hi flight profiles.

A patient player, one who likes circuatous routes with nap of the earth flying, and a kind BR that avoids the better AIMs, might get to bomb bases on some missions. But % will be low and at least in RB you aren’t highlighted at long range (although obviously neither are the defender!).

I’d see more similarities with the later F-111A (due to its speed), but a tad older, less advanced, and no AAM’s and guns obviously.

Maybe a bit like a overgrown Buccaneer S.1 on steroids, even.

I think it could work, at least as Event or Squadron vehicle,…

And see how that thing performs - quite badly. That things only saving grace was Bullpups at 8.7… I’d like to see it (the Vigi) in game but I don’t see how it’d be workable in anything but Sim. Too low a BR and nothing can catch it, and too high and it becomes dead.

Well, my common mistake here: i often look at it from (my) Sim EC perspective, where aircraft like Buccaneers, Tornados, Intruders etc. are very good… = /

Same deal with the conventional load B-58, both are exceedingly neat aircraft, but have niche available weapon loads for the speed at which they move.
