A-10's Airframe is weak

i play the A-10C and i can jink so many AA shells fired at me. but 1 little HE or AP shell takes off the tail. be it 20mm or 30mm. the aircraft should realistically be able to take flak shells and still fly. but currently you have pretty much a net 0 survivability if hit in most places of the airframe. who else/what else have similar experiences?

photo of me getting REAL lucky that the missile a MIG-21 fired at me hit the nose. but all other damage was from a few cannon shots.

no lol, you’ve read too much propaganda

the aircraft irl has no real armor, and has no real way to survive being hit OTHER THAN multiple redundancies on the aircraft regarding its engines, control lines, etc. This doesn’t mean you’re some flying abrams tank

They should just make the control surfaces stronger but thats literally it

Something tells me if a missile hits this spot IRL the plane isnt going to be around much longer

The A10 continuing flying after being struck isn’t exactly uncommon, but it’s not really doing it in a happy manner. Most of the redundancies just keep it intact and flight worthy enough to drag itself back to an airfield. I do find it a bit amusing that it gets the praise for survivability when the Soviet design for a similar role (The Mighty Frogfoot) is actually armoured to absorb heavy retaliatory fire.

Which admittedly, often doesn’t work out in its favour, as it turns out that planes don’t particularly like retaliatory fire even when designed to withstand it. Though both do tend to survive things that would make other aircraft struggle to return.
