History: The Jan Mayen class (or P6615 Project) is a Norwegian built class of OPVs designed to patrol and carry out operations within Arctic conditions where most other patrol vessels would struggle. She would replace the Nordkapp class of which, only 1 (NoCGV Nordkapp) is in service as of writing. All vessels of this class are named after islands.

With the melting ice, this created more open waters that the Norwegian navy and coast guard needed. That lead to the ageing Nordkapp class successors to take their place.

These vessels were built by VARD in Romania and designed by LMG Marin for the price of around 6 billion kroner for all 3 vessels. The first two vessels, KV Jan Mayen and KV Bjørnøya had entered service in 2023 while KV Hopen was delivered on the 12th of June 2024.

NoCGV Hopen took part in Operation Arctic Cohesion 2026, a joint exercise between the USA and Norway where NoCGV Hopen and Legend class USCGC Stone improving interoperability between the two vessels from July 8th to 15th.

As of writing, all the vessels are still in service and have seen an uneventful career with many years to come should the life span of it’s predecessor class is indication.
