In what version would you like to see USS Norfolk (DL-1) in-game? Choose wisely.
  • As Built (interim 3"/50 caliber guns)
  • 1959 version (new 3”/70 cal guns; elimination of 20mm turrets)
  • 1960 version (ASROC launcher; elimination of two aft Weapon Alpha launchers )
  • I am indifferent.

USS Norfolk (DL-1)

Hello all! I’d like to suggest the unique destroyer configuration known as USS Norfolk (DL-1) for War Thunder. USS Norfolk was the United States Navy’s first post-World War II destroyer leader before the more capable Mitscher-class destroyers, originally conceived as a submarine hunter-killer cruiser. She was armed with eight twin 76 mm autocannon mounts and an extensive suite of anti-submarine warfare (ASW) weapons, serving until 1970 before being stricken and scrapped in 1974.

This definitely is a great idea!

for me ships like that should come on a folder like USS Norfolk (DL-1) (1947) and then the other in the same folder USS Norfolk (DL-1) (1959) and USS Norfolk (DL-1) (1960) or you have to research a modification and once you get it the ship changes name and br

All versions gib, cool unique ship

coold boat she will be great in game “in theory”

Even though the 1959 refit has better main guns, losing all 16 20mm cannons is too big of a loss IMO. +1

I think it work if the guns shot sap… wait wrong game

I would definitely prefer the latter option. Gaijin currently has a policy of choosing only one configuration for a given ship with a unique hull number and name. In other words, two or more ships with the same design, same name and same hull number cannot coexist in different configurations in-game.

That policy really needs to change, but for now, implementing the different configurations as researchable modifications seems like the most logical solution in this case.

Agreed, but the 3"/70 caliber guns have a much higher rate of fire. You can reliably spam HE-VT with them anyway.

Even if the 3"/70 caliber guns are proven that they cannot use APHE or SAP ammunition, that’s largely a non-issue when they can fire HE rounds with a larger explosive filler at a much higher rate of fire than the 3"/50 caliber guns, which have a lower rate of fire and less effective HE rounds.

That said, the ship also had a configuration with the 3"/50 caliber guns, which would provide access to APHE if that’s what someone prefers.

This alongside USS Northampton CLC-1 would be really cool!
