Introduction

The Ikv 91 was developed during the 1960s as part of the Swedish Army’s effort to replace a large quantity of obsolete Second World War equipment with a modern, highly mobile fire support vehicle. In 1964 the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) issued requirements for the ‘Ikv new’ project, calling for a lightweight, amphibious vehicle capable of operating in the forests, marshes, and underdeveloped terrain of northern Sweden. To keep costs low while still providing effective anti-tank capability, the vehicle was to use a 9cm low-pressure gun capable of firing modified ammunition derived from the Pvpj 1110 recoilless rifle. Several Swedish companies submitted proposals, including Bofors, Landsverk, and Hägglunds, ranging from traditional casemate tank destroyers to advanced turreted vehicles with autoloaders. After years of evaluation, Hägglunds’ design was selected largely because of its extensive parts commonality with the already successful Pbv 302 APC, simplifying production and maintenance. Three prototypes were ordered in 1968, tested extensively from 1969 onward, and eventually refined into the production Ikv 91 adopted by the Swedish Army in 1975.

The Ikv 91 chassis also formed the basis for several experimental and proposed variants, the most significant being the Ikv 91-105. Early experiments with mounting a 105mm gun in a makeshift turret began as early as 1971, proving that the lightweight chassis could handle considerably greater firepower than originally intended. During the 1980s, amid growing international interest in light tanks, Hägglunds developed the Ikv 91-105 as a major modernisation of the original design.

Now, I know you may be thinking, we already have the Ikv 91-105 in-game. And that’s true, we have the Ikv 91-105 armed with a Bofors low-pressure 105mm cannon. But another variant of the Ikv 91-105 was built, armed with a stabilised Rheinmetall RH 105-20 low pressure cannon, capable of firing NATO standard 105mm ammunition, including APFSDS. This variant also had the engine upgraded to 360/380hp (sources are conflicting here), and, as an extra bonus, was also fitted with thermal sights.

So, despite being rather similar to the existing Bofors IKV 91-105, the Ikv 91-105 (RH 105) would be a good oppurtunity to get a light tank that packs a little more punch. With thermal sights, and potentially DM33 (the current one in-game only gets DM23), alongside decent mobility with over 20hp/t, the Ikv 91-105 (RH 105) would be a capable light tank to fill out 9.3 Sweden, roughly equivalent to something like the Leopard 1A5.

I already run the IKV 91-105 at 9.3, so this is hell yeah for me

She is so low in the Water hopefully in game she does not sink if the sea state is poor.

so what differences would this have to the one in-game, different ammo or just velocity?

Maybe it’s a controversial opinion on my end, but I feel that this variant should only go to India, seeing as it was likely the reason that such a vehicle was built in the first place. It was supposedly trialed there (which I assume is where Hagglunds got the “tested in tropical conditions” claim for their brochure, however I have yet to see any photos unfortunately.

This would probably be better than the current Ikv 91-105 due to thermals and x10 zoom and 6-8 rounds per minute is also pretty nice

I also think it should come to the British tree since the 105mm is a British shell and gun.

The Strv 81, Strv 101, Strv 103, Strv 104, Strv 105 should all now go to britain cuz centurions and 105mm L7 guns and ammo.

And all Strv 121 and Strv 122 and its variants now go to germany (Insert germany mains cheering)

Are you mocking me or is that your actual belief? Surely not since the Rh 105 series is a German modification of the L7 and the shells are largely German license produced versions of Israeli ammo.

It looks extra thick than the actual IKV-91, does it have additional pontoons?

Possibly a better round (DM33), but also slightly better mobility (20.2 hp/t vs. 19.3 hp/t), more ammunition (50 rds vs. 40 rds) - which is not that useful in the game, and better gun depression (-10° vs. -8°).
That’s what I can see on a quick glance.

Hell yeah. +1 Would be a neat foldered or squadron vehicle.

I have read a bit more into the prototype in question, and according to both Rickard O. Lindström and SP15, this prototype was called Ikv 105 and not Ikv 91-105, which was the one with the Bofors 10,5 cm and not the Rh 105-20.

If this is correct, then the name chosen for this suggestion would be wrong. I myself did not know this before I read a bit more about this prototype. I knew there were two different stages, but not that there were two different names given.

Here is the mention of it on Ointres.se: “Vagnen kom att benämnas Ikv 105
And here on SP15´s blog: image
As you can see, it is the caption of said image; this theme continues further down the page.

Swedish tanks: Ikv 91 revisited – From the swedish archives

With how few vehicles Sweden can receive at this BR I disagree unless you’d like to list what can fill its role in performance. Especially domestic designed models are on low number.

This is the same type of thinking that people use to argue that Sweden shouldn’t have gotten NASAMs from Norway because the US deserves it more which was silly already.

When I read about the trials in India, it sounds like the Ikv 91 was trialed first and then later the Ikv 105 was trialed.

You could give a Ikv 91 as a India event vehicle or premium and the Sweden can have this; the Ikv 105

Another amphibious light tank with thermals and a NATO-standard 105mm? I’m not going to pretend like there is an exact replacement I can think of.

However I also doubt there is any lack of potential 9.3 light tanks in general to give Sweden, especially when Finland and all its Patria variants are taken into consideration.

Well I don’t believe that, the NASAMS and its derivatives are joint developments after all, and should go to both Norway and America where applicable. I don’t necessarily agree with adding more Norwegian stuff to the Swedish TT though, but that’s a different conversation.
