Supermarine Spitfire F Mk. XII

Hey everybody. I’d like to suggest the missing link of Griffon-powered Spitfire Mk XIIs in War Thunder, the Spitfire F Mk XII. It was the first combat Spitfire variant to enter service with a Griffon engine. With only 100 Mk XIIs built during the war, the aircraft primarily served in the air defense role, where it proved to be a vital RAF asset against the Luftwaffe’s hit-and-run raiders and later the V-1 flying bomb campaign. The Mk XII first entered service in 1943 and was withdrawn from frontline duty in 1944.

Thank you for taking the time to read my suggestion! 😃

long overdue (as long as ingame is NOT clipped wing)

A +1 from me! I need all the Spitfires!

+1 for all

i thought they were all clipped variants though with the exception of the protoype.

Unfortunate, in that case I hope for EN221 as an event vehicle.

The production version can come to tech tree

completely out of topic

But why do I never see griffons? I am very low on the British tree.
I know Lf Mk.IX is super fine tuned to ARB’s medium-low altitude short range interceptions.
But are they really that bad? Britain players unlock and buy 2 griffons for a Mk.IX yet you won’t even see a dude flying one out of curiosity.
Ain’t no way you people avoiding them like the plague.

Also +1

They are overtiered across the board I think. They aren’t as nimble as the early spitfires and they can’t compete in speed and energy with some other superprops.

Spitfires are often among the best dogfighters for the BR, but the later ones are mediocre at that job

I see

I believed griffons were simply spitfires that went all out on Boom and Zoom like an american prop.
Didn’t know they fell short on that too.

Yeah they BnZ much better than the early ones, but you look at the P-51H and it does everything better except it doesnt have cannons. Yak-3U will eat them alive… etc etc

i find the xivc the best of the griffons myself. a rank iv prem with 200% sl boost in arcade. at 4.7 br its a strong fighter. especially in a down tier situation. does perform a bit better at turning then the e variant due to its use of the universal c-type wing and malcom hood canopy.

my bad. en221 isnt the prototype. its the very first production mk xii.

i may be wrong but en222 also had standard wings. but was modified with the clipped wings as a trial. en223 and the rest had the clipped wings from factory.

this is according to google ai. so dont know how accurate this is.

wont mind seeing both versions as you said. a non clipped version as event/prem or squadron would be a good alternative to the tt version. esp if the late viii airframe mk xii is the tt version.

Here are more photos of EN221. I initially thought EN221 didn’t have unclipped wings, until it was pointed out.

Looks superb, though.
