Brewster F2A-3 Buffalo w/ wing 20 mm cannons

Hey everybody. I’d like to suggest an extremely rare and lesser-known modified Brewster F2A-3 Buffalo for the US tree in War Thunder. Based on a photo I found in books, this Buffalo was modified by replacing the wing-mounted 0.50-cal machine guns with 20 mm Hispano-Suiza cannons, giving it an armament layout of 2 x 0.50-cal and 2 x 20 mm guns. Brewster managed to trial at least one modified F2A-3 with this configuration and produced nine sets of spare Buffalo wings designed for 20 mm cannon installation before the Navy terminated further F2A development in 1942.

Thank you for taking the time to read my suggestion! 😃

The US never used they Hispano with drum mags, did they? 🤔

x2 .50 & x2 20mm just sounds so goated wiih a plane like this

Doesn’t seem to be much specific info other than the US did have them early on, but found the limitation bad enough to quickly change to belt feed. Just when this change happened doesn’t seem to be noted but obviously the aircraft with belt feeds are well known - the earliest P-38 prototypes of course had 37mm cannon - the P-38E was the first with the 20mm

It was definitely an available option, according to TM 9-227, even in manuals as late as 1943 (it’s called the 20-mm 60-Round Magazine M1, but it seemed to be compatible with both M1 and AN/M2 guns). To what extent it was used operationally, I don’t know.

What is the source on 325 x .50 cal rpg? To my knowledge the fuselage boxes on the F2A-3 took 250 rpg. Also curious on where the (likely) 60 rpg for the 20 mm comes from.

To add a bit of trivia, the 20 mm Oerlikon was tested on the XF2A-1 in 1938 and on the XF2A-2 in 1941 (actually the same aircraft but converted, BuNo 0451).

325 rpg for .50-cal was an error on my side. I have corrected it.

This is my educated guess. There are no documents or sources stating the ammunition capacity of the 20 mm guns. If the Brewster archives still exist today, perhaps we can find the answer there.
