Basic Background

The S-300 (NATO name: SA-10 “Grumble”) is a long-range surface-to-air missile system developed in the Soviet Union in the 1970s. It is based on the original S-300P system and was developed by NPO Almaz, which also acted as the main system integrator. The actual guided missiles were designed by the design bureaus MKB “Fakel” and NPO Novator, formerly known as OKB-2 and OKB-8.
Originally designed to defend against air attacks by high-altitude bombers, reconnaissance aircraft, and cruise missiles, the S-300 was later developed for the defense against ballistic missiles. Development of the system began in 1979 with the aim of protecting large industrial facilities, administrative centers, and military installations and ensuring effective airspace surveillance.
The next modernization of the S-300PM series was introduced in 1992, but was primarily aimed at the export market; the S-300PMU.
The FRA-4324 (Air Defense Missile Division), based in Retschow, was originally equipped with the Soviet S-75M “Volchov”. This system was designed for medium to high altitudes and was used in the GDR for airspace defense against enemy reconnaissance and bomber aircraft. In the course of advancing technical development and increasing demands on response time and target diversity, the FRA was converted to the new FRA 4351, then equipped with the new top-secret S-300PMU “Angara” air defense system between 1986 and 1988.

The S-300PMU system enabled significantly improved target acquisition, response time, and effectiveness against a wide range of air targets, including cruise missiles and tactical ballistic missiles. It entered service in around 1988, making FRA 4351 one of the most modern air defense units in the GDR.

The Flugabwehr-Raketen-Komplex S-300PMU Overall

The S-300PMU system is a modern mobile air defense system with medium to long range. It is based on the S-300P complex and includes, among other things and armed with 5V55R missiles - SARH + SAGG + INS guidance.
The complex also consists of the 5N63S command post with the 30H6 multifunction and target illumination radar, mounted on MAZ-543M 8x8, up to four 5P85S launchers mounted on MAZ-543 8x8.
The 5N63S command post is installed on the F20 chassis (based on the MAZ-543M) and consists of a radar and communications cabin (F1C) and a combat control center (CBU) in the F2K cabin. Power is supplied by two integrated gas turbine generators and a generator driven by the vehicle’s engine. For stable communication with higher-level command structures, a 25-meter-high telescopic mast (AMU FL-95 “Sosna”) can be used if necessary.
The 30N6 multifunction radar detects, selects, and automatically tracks targets, including low-flying aircraft, while simultaneously illuminating and guiding up to twelve missiles to six different targets. It takes into account both passive and active sources of interference and can automatically select the least disturbed target channel. Operational range between 160-200 km, max alt of 35 km, operating in I/J-Band at a frequency of 3-4GHz.

The system is highly mobile, deployed and ready in just five minutes. The engagement range for aerodynamic targets is up to 75 kilometers, and for ballistic targets up to 25 kilometers. The minimum engagement distance is 5 kilometers, and the engagement altitude ranges up to 25 km. The system can detect targets traveling at speeds of up to 1200 meters per second and deploy 5V55R missiles with speeds of up to 1336 m/s and a total warhead weight of up to 133kg, using FRAG-HE explosive.
The MAZ-543M is a heavy, all-terrain military vehicle manufactured in the Soviet Union that serves as a carrier platform for various weapon systems, including the S-300 air defense system.
The vehicle is 11,4 m long and 3,07 m wide, powered by a powerful D12A-525 V12 diesel engine with 525 hp, enabling the vehicle to reach a top speed of around 60 to 65 km/h.
