"ZTZ-201" aka "New Chinese MBT"

Hi everyone I thought we could get this thread going in order to collect verified information on the newly unveiled “ZTZ-201”. I emphasize verified because theres been a lot of rumors going on since the program became publicly known back circa 2018. As more verified information comes up I´ll update the thread.

So lets start. I´ll be compiling below pieces of information about the tank, clarifying what has yet to be 100% verified and what has been checked.

Some things to note about it thus far, a majority of which is speculation / rumors of course.

  • It doesn’t have a hatch in the rear of the turret, potentially meaning it uses a new autoloader design, or ammunition is loaded in via a hatch in the roof.
  • The gun is likely a 105 mm.
  • It is allegedly in the 40 ton weight class.
  • The APS seems to be the GL6 with 4 tubes, and sensors / cameras covering 360 degrees.
  • There’s rumors of it using a hybrid engine.
  • This is allegedly going to be replacing the ZTZ96/96A, and a ZTZ99A replacement is still under development.

Hopefully we can find out more about it sometime, it’s a very pretty looking vehicle, as are the other ones shown so far on the same chassis.

To be honest, the tank looks too… sketchy and creepy. It’s more like a VT5 that someone tried to turn into a proper MBT, but it turned out really… not great. It’s like trying to convert a 2S25 Sprut into an MBT by slapping some NERA inside.

In short, it looks bad.

ZTZ-201 is not his unit code, and the unit code has not been made public yet. It is known that the factory code is WZ-124, which originated in the 1980s

Is all the crew in the hull? It seems that way with the shape of the turret.

Also I’m curious about that armor layout. If it has composite, it looks like its in a similar layout as the type 10

Pseudo head down layout similar to T14

Where does ZTZ201 even come from, and how do we know that the industrial designation is WZ124?

ZTZ201 is not an official release and is a code name speculated by players

124 is a screenshot of relevant internal books published by relevant personnel on Weibo

I assumed so. Because the 20 part of 201 implies this is from 2020 which is a damn big stretch. This gives of “ZTZ98” energy

The actual start date of 124 should be in the 1980s. However, the PLA weapon code is based on the service time and not the project start time

But how do we know that this is the 124?

I know that we know the 124 started in the 1980s. But how do we know that this is the same project? This is a random twitter user. How do we actually know that this is the same thing as the 124 in the 1980s?

To be honest, I have never seen this helmet, it may be similar to an airplane helmet

All self-developed factory vehicles will propose several options and then choose one

That doesn’t answer the question. How do we we know that this new tank is the 124 from the 1980s? How do we know that this new tank is any kind of 124 at all?

Just because he started this project in 1980 doesn’t mean he will have the same configuration as the one proposed in 1980. This car may be pushed to redo many times, just like the ZTZ-99 originally had 3-4 options

You’ve not provided any proof that this is the same project though. It could be, I’m not saying it isn’t, I’m saying that you haven’t proven that this is the same project.

If you want to know, you can only wait until 9.3
:)
Currently, only semi official figures have been leaked
