I’m not a good pilot… the Yak-3 is, however, a monstrous plane. The only time I’ve ever flown 1v6 into a fur ball, lived, and clutched the match is in a Yak-3.
It’s a UFO. The SHvK are so strong that going to the 3P doesn’t even feel like much of an upgrade because the plane old 3 kills with such authority.
I’ve been holding off on the 3U to play more U.S. props… but… the call is hard to resist.
CatWerfer just threw up some updated EM diagrams on his G-Drive. At the request of a viewer, he has a bunch of fighters from BR 4.7-5.3 plotted against the Yak-3 as a reference plot.
I almost hate to spoil it… but the Yak-3 is better than most of the fighters in the 4.7-5.3 bracket (clearly in some cases, arguably in others), sometimes by a healthy margin.
Worth a look if experimentally derived EM diagrams are of interest to you.
Lmao what are you talking about, you didn’t even quote me on what I was saying to begin with, this makes you look disingenuous. Now do you want to provide some in-sight as to why the Yak-3 shouldn’t be 4.7? or are you for the BR increase?
I always focus on Yak-3s as they are extremely nasty to fight and can ruin matches if you ignore them. My team died lke flies, i played 1 vs 8 and was sure that i will find one or two Yak-3s at their forward airfield.
I messed up my attack as there were actually 4 (!!!) enemies around this airfield and thx to my potato aim i scored just 3 hits (2 on a 109, one on a Yak-3). But i had to outrun a 109 G-6 so i extended.
It took me 3 attacks (with 2 hits of 0.50 cal API-T for each run) on the French Yak-3 to kill him (no fire) - setting up a high alt energy trap (he followed me above 8,5 km…) took way too long but i could not afford to start turnfighting in a P-38 L above their forward airfield with 4 enemies near. So i decided to extended to the map border to have an (almost) undisturbed 1 vs 1.
At the end of the day i lost by tickets and from the last 7 enemies 4 managed to crash (one a maneuver kill by me, 109 G-2 ripped his wings trying to junp on me with way too high speed), 2 (CHN P-38, 5.0 Me 410) were alive and i managed to kill the Yak-3 trying to catch me, he took off during my strafing run.
I played a couple matches yesterday as El Diablo… er, I mean in the Yak-3. It’s funny how terrible USSR teams are - every bit as bad as any other nation. How they manage to fly such incredibly strong planes and still die so quickly and having accomplished so little is a mystery to me.
That aside, it’s worth noting that myself and one other Yak-3 clutched a 2v6 for the win in my first match. This was against 109s F/G models who got a little too greedy/aggressive. They failed to capitalize because the 109 (including the G-6/G-14) is EASILY outperformed by the Yak-3 in the typical relatively low alt fight. I hadn’t flown it for a while, so my aim was terrible and I ran out of ammo - which cost me a G-6. .
My second match was a loss, 1v6 at the end - and I made some bad decisions. On the bright side, my first two kills were a Bf-109 G-14 and a Ki-84 Ko. I was honestly surprised how quickly I was able to get on the Ki-84. When flown well, these 5.3 planes can just about hang with the Yak-3… it’s a little funny that every match is functionally a down tier because your FM/performance peers are 5.0/5.3 aircraft…
Agree with the general sentiment here. Many of the Yak family need a 0.3 BR bump.
Yak-1B → 3.3
Eremin’s Yak-3 (e) → 4.3
Yak-3 → 4.7
Yak-3P - I actually think this is fine at 5.0 since it’s a slightly worse FM than the Yak-3
Yak-3T - haven’t played it, but I imagine it is fine at 5.0 since it’s similar FM to 3P.
Yak-3U → 6.0 (or even 6.3)
I haven’t used the VK-107 outside of test flights, but it seems like it could potentially go to 6.0. Since it’s an uncommon premium, it’s not as big of an issue as the U which is both underitered and spammed.
Imho you are right for USSR teams - but the real “good” pilots fly mostly the French premium version, clear better MM. And these players are usually pathetic low lifes in the meaning that they play like a**holes. Nevertheless some of them have outstanding stats.
A prime example from my last match in this replay. There is only one French Yak-3 in this match - and the Russian player uses every strength of it and if he is outplayed he runs to his af aaa - like in this match two times. I see him frequently. 5.686 kills vs 312 deaths and a 4 week K/D of 14:1 is not really unusual to see in French Yak-3s.
Talking from an SB perspective the Yak-3’s are superb aircraft (as they should be) but the Shvak damage needs realistically nerfing. The way Russian aircraft can disintegrate planes in front of you is a bit cartoonish considering how weak the round was in reality.
In SB they’re 4.7 (should be 5.0) but like all Yaks in my experience they suffocate up high. If a Yak gets on my tail and I’m in the G-6 I’ve noticed they’re weak in climbing spirals as well no matter the altitude.
With stupid mixed battles rooms the Spitfire F Mk IX is very competitive against them especially when you get chaps that just like to do stick to the balls turns.
Bad aim with not that much ammo, for an experience player 120 round of shvak can get 5 kills but I guess that a inexperienced player would waste them really fast.
And the most obvious: rip speed at 700hp, with such a fast airframe is bound to make even the best player rip if they are not careful.
I’d say the only reason it’s not that spammed is this amazing feature of airfield AA that everyone love and gaijin should absolutely keep in the game as long as possible.
It makes it that if someone meet a yak3 high enough, they can dive above the yak3 rip speed long enough to reach the airfield and start camping.
Barely, the Yak-3U is much better in every aspect. It’s much deserving for it to go to 6.0-6.3 at best. There’s almost no plane in the game that can beat a competent Yak-3U player.
Wherever the Yak-3U goes the VK-107 should follow. However VK-107 requires manual engine control to not turn into a fireball 30s into using WEP, unlike the 3U that can WEP for a generous amount of time on auto controls and be fine. There are some other quirks with auto controls that gimp the VK-107 performance (auto tries to cool for 111C but overheat threshold is 109C, auto radiators mess with top speed leading to lower top speed during WEP vs 100% power).
