I’m not very knowledgeable in the subject but i think it’s because the old flag was never the Japanese national flag and was only used for navy (and something else i think?). All flags for the nations in-game are the national flags and not the flags of specific units or army sections.

The rising sun flag would be roughly equivalent to using the UK’s naval ensign for the whole tree, makes no sense
I understand that it wasn’t the national flag but since both the army and the navy used/uses it was still the more commonly know flag and why was it only removed 12years later why couldnt it stay

National flags are the default

the russian navy of the russian empire uses the naval ensign and doesnt use the actual russian empire flag
this is the only exception to the rule
Imperial Germany and Weimar Republic ships both use their naval ensigns isntead of national flags.
Third Reich ships also use their naval ensign/war flag

To my eyes the one currently in game is the darker older one. And the other nations also have their older flags.
Which makes no sense because they stopped using it in 1999, and the Type-10 I recall was not from 1999.
Also, the IJ flag was the war flag for WW2. The Japanese Hinomaru from 1870->1999 wasn’t used in war directly.
Just give me back the rising Sun flag I really think this is ridiculous that I can’t have my rising sun

I was talking about the main nation one in hangar as well as the older vehicles.
Making modern vehicles have the modern flag in their stat cards is a valid request (in my personal opinion) and should then be reported. You can bug report it here (just search a bit first so that you don’t report something that is already reported and known about): (Gaijin.net // Issues)

Yeah, I’m not doing that, going by how many requests get denied for being “not a bug,” and there are videos and screenshots since bug reports became a thing, which have been denied for the dumbest of reasons. If someone wants to be my guest. But you play long enough, you know they just deny it anyway.
A better solution would be to make it a purchasable decal. Or being able to change the background flag for the soulless stat sheet pictures.

Historically yeah the flag is Originally for the Navy then later used by the army and ceremonially later on, I think there should be an option to like switch the flag around at least for players who still want to keep that style of the Flag.
Also it is a war flag and this is War Thunder after all wouldn’t it be proper to put up the war flag after all.

And no, the change wasnt stupid. Japan was the only ingame nation using a non-national flag to represent their TT, other than Germany. Changing it is the only correct answer, and Warthunder is also primarily advertised using modern day technology, something that the Empire of Japan did not have, and thus, leaving a naval flag that is commonly seen as the flag of Imperial Japan in the game doesnt fit either the current time period or the nation itself
Also, unless you want your ships to have historically accurate banners, theres no real reason to bring it back to the game
