VR has been broken for months. Nobody can play WT in VR without crashing. No one. Complete game breaking bug. Multiple bug reports aren’t being responded to. No dev is saying anything. Not even a, “We are looking into it.”
What gives?

Hm? I play WT exclusively in VR, no issues…
Must be that special Game Master mod you have ;-)
I have no Issue with VR !
make sure your drivers up to date!
also is your GPU VR ready?
also use SteamVR beta!
I don’t know how you guys are getting it to work because the issue for everyone right now is anti-cheat seems to be blocking openXR. If you’re connecting with VR nothing you’re doing makes you an exception to that rule afaik. What headsets are you using?
As far as myself I’m using Steam VR with updated drivers and a 4080. Originally the problem was a black screen when connecting through Steam VR but a workaround was figured out. Now, SteamVR still only loads a black screen and when using the workaround (which technically still uses SteamVR) the entire game will crash specifically when loading from the hanger to a match, from a match to the hanger or randomly during a match if you use another workaround and launch VR after a match has loaded in. Also randomly, myself and others are getting messages from the anti-cheat that either openXR is being blocked or in my case, Virtual Desktop was being blocked. I can also connect with air link and have tried but that doesn’t solve the openXR problem if that is in fact causing the issue.
You can check the bug reporting section. There are at least 5 open topics with multiple users indicating the same problem and there has yet to be a dev response.
Meta Quest 3 with VirtualDesktop.
It does so indeed, but only in maybe one out of twenty starts. The In just need to restart the client and it goes through. I think for me it’s only OpenXR, never get VirtualDesktop blocked.
For me it will crash every time while using the workaround. I’m also on a Quest 3 with either airlink or virtual desktop.
Now it goes to black screen no matter what when trying to launch VR. It doesn’t matter if I launch from SteamVR or go to WarThunder and then switch to VR from there. Since it won’t go beyond the black screen I haven’t stuck around to see if warthunder eventually crashes like it has been.
I find it hard to believe that the other 2 people in this topic aren’t having issues when this problem seems to be across the board for all players. If they aren’t, they must be 1 in 100,000 lucky.
…or you’re one in 100’000 unlucky.
As for me, I have now used a total of 2x Quest2’s and 2x Quest 3 on 4 different PC’s, always with zero issues in connection with WT. And I’ve used link cable, air link, VirtualDesktop, again, no matter the method, I never had issues.
Some points though:
In WT, “VR mode” is always toggled on, no need to switch on/off depending on what you do
Always connect the headset first, only then start WT. Contrary to e.g. MSFS, wehere you can also connect the headset and use it when the sim is already running, you need the connection to work before starting WT
Oh, I don’t know if the latest DX12 stuff and RT stuff works well with VR, maybe that’s an issue here for you?
I’ve been using VR for around 4 years now. Yes, I always connect the headset first and launch through SteamVR with all vr games. That was how I did war thunder until it stopped working and loaded only a black screen into the headset. The workaround is to launch war thunder in flat screen with the headset connected to steamvr and then switch to vr within warthunder’s graphics options. For a time it did work and then it stopped working.
After you mentioned DirectX I checked that and although I know I switched it to DX11 when warthunder updated to 12, my settings had reverted back to DX12. I’ve switched it again and will have to see if that works when I have the time.
Thank you for this. I think the SteamVR Beta might have fixed it, I also set my desktop to 60Hz (it’s a 175Hz monitor so it’s useless pumping out that much when I need it for the HMD). The fps is back to showing 120 in the headset (hasn’t been like that since June 6th when both steamVR and War thunder updated- friends in discord suggested rolling back the steamVR which worked for a short while but it was stubbornly sticking at 60fps). I’m also on DX11 again and my HWMonitor showing 99% which is good instead of getting sweaty at 100%.
Game still gets lumpy after 1hour when the bots start laying eggs on the airfield, so overall back to working as good as it ever was.
After switching back to DX11 that did get the workaround to work again, although going directly from SteamVR to warthunder still results in a black screen. I’ll have to check out the SteamVR beta to see if that allows a direct connection again.
So many hoops to jump through for this when other VR games run without a problem.
Had 2 major freezes tonight, threw me out of VR then back in after 5-10 seconds. I’d say it was more the strength of my PC saving it from crashing fully. In game FPS still showing mostly 118-120, rest of evening was OKish but quite distracting as both times were when I was in combat. Stats as my previous post.
