Why do people insist SPAA get high pen AP rounds for "defense."

remembers multiple nukes in spaa vehicles and whistles innocently

While people often overstate the effectiveness of SPAA, I would suggest being careful of going too far in the opposite direction.

Current SPAA setup is 100% fine imo, it gives them the ability to fight back and also be useful when the enemy does not spawn any planes in/there are multiple SPAA on the team, most SPAA have some kind of critical weakness to offset their capacity be it open topped, no armour, limited firing angles, etc.

Honestly, I think the “easiest” fix is to make majority AP belts increase SPAA SP cost to roughly equal the cost of a light tank.

Makes sense.

Not necessarily. It’s more so pointing at SPAA that are exclusively used as TD’s.

And no, outcome of matches aren’t influenced by this, I can understand you making that assumption do to my wording in the post.

I’m focusing less on match outcome and more on general performance.

Like, I see a lot of Xm246 players for example attempting to play as TD’s rather than bothering with air duties.

No, this isn’t that type of post. I’m bringing up the topic because both sides have been discussed quite a bit by players.

But then again, what other reason can I think of for why the Kugelbtliz its at 7.0 in the first place, because it’s roof doesn’t provide much armor at all.

Then why is the Kugelblitz 7.0 and the Flakpanzer 6.3 lol.

If that wasnt the case, they should be around the same br, and also german 37mm aphe getting nerfed. It sure didnt get nerfed out of the blue for no reason.

What are you talking about?

Its more than enough to protect from overpressure risks though, if I see a Kugel when flying my strikemaster I avoid it unless its firing at another plane and even then think twice if I only have SURAs.

SURAs are great for taking out open top SPAA, you dont even need a direct hit often and you can take SPAA out from 2km+ away with only firing 1 or 2 rockets if you are good with them, but a Kugal having a roof makes it extremely hard to take out at extreme distance without using a lot of rockets and requires you to come in far closer.

Bane of my existance are Kugels when I fly my Strikemaster or SK60.

Never underestimate how useful a closed turret is, just like with Skink.

Not only can rounds like these provide good defense against ground targets oftentimes higher velocity ammo means the effective range is increased for air defense even if these ammo types don’t have a payload for anti air enough hits in target will down an aircraft
There’s also the point that they are light tanks that also get high velocity ammunition types for their autocannons so why would SPAA not have them

The nerfs to germanies APHE and HVAP shells, if I remember correctly. It was a long time ago

A single rocket exploding within a few meters of it kills it though, unlike with the Flakpanzer…

And that’s exactly why it’s at the BR it’s at now. Despite the Flakpanzer 341 virtually being better in almost every way.

Because Ithe Skink is 5.3 and it’s worse than the Kugelblitz in some regards, but it doesn’t have access to good AP rounds for it’s 20s, followed by it’s limited magazines.

Oh, you mean when it was switched to calculated.
Well with some luck the 3,7 cm Pzgr.18 will get 800m/s and 52mm pen as well as the 2 cm Pzgr.40 will get the revised penetration calculation and also around 56-61mm or so.

Because why not? If the vehicle historically had and was able to carry those high pen rounds, then the player should be able to choose to carry them.

The Gepard had a reserve exclusively for AP rounds, as it did not carry a full belt of AP. This is not represented in-game.

Yes it is. The 20 round belts are for APDS, and its as such capped for a total of 40 rounds APDS in game. The mainbelt is open for a own mix of Aphe and HE, to the own requested levels as dual AA and Anti ground, against both armored air and ground targets.

I don’t think it would ever be loaded with more than 50% APHE though.

You always want HE rounds in your 35mm autocannon.

Real life isn’t like War Thunder after all.

Since you can’t flip a switch to select ammunition, a mixed belt gives the most flexibility.

But even in WT, more than 50% APHE doesn’t really make sense.
