What-ifs and maybes: AIM-9C derivatives

Was it only tested on a F-4? Because if so I don’t see it being realisticly added, unless we get like an event China Lake F-4J

Honestly, I don’t know. Information on the program is extremely scarce. Technically speaking, since it was largely based off the AIM-7P, any aircraft that could use that might be able also use the AIM-7R, but doing that would probably piss off the historical accuracy cabal ;)

There are some rumours that some prototype/pre-production AIM-7Rs were used in the Gulf War (which would mean carriage by F-14 or F/A-18), but most people consider those claims to be fake.

It would act like the R-77 in game.

A highly manuverable missile with no range whatsoever.

But more realistically it would evolve to be something like the Aim-7.

What if Aim-7D had IR seeker? Fortunately we don’t have to imagine.

Russians are also known for putting different guidance system into same missile body.

R-77 had some experiment variants with IR seeker
R-27T series

it was tested on US 4th gen fighters or at least happened at the same time, worst case we get it on the F-4N/J/S and F/A-18A/C early

a sparrow isn’t “highly manuverable”

AIM-7B was tested with AIM-9B seeker

Got any more R-77T info btw?

Well I’m just saying if the Aim-9 became an SARH/ARH without signlificant change to the body, like making it larger, but it wouldnt be an aim-9 at all.

Got any more R-77T info btw?

No sorry. It’s just something I read on the Wikipedia. I don’t read Russian either.
