War Thunder: The Great War!

Yeah, I forgot how absurd the grind was last April Fools event. I got the decal and quit.

Since this is the supposed topic for reviews of this event - for some reason it did not appear in suggested as I made my own topic - might as well post the link to it here:

As I expected, the sweaties have ruined the mode by finding the most effective sniping positions, spawning the Garfield and destroying hell out of everything. Want to actually play the objective? Lol no, you can’t. To repeat myself, leave it to WT players to suck the fun out of the game.

I GEd the last task, because screw it. The mode isn’t fun anymore.

Oddly enough the small patches of sandbags around the map do slow the Garford down massively - so it isn’t like they can’t make terrain-specific effects on it’s mobility!

Just today’s 2 to do - will do the CP 1 first to get the title as it’s fastest, then see how I feel about it for the icon…

I shot a zepplin 5 times with the Mark V and the thing was still flying

The French had anti gravity devices since ww1

Biggest complaint of mine remains the lack of air only mode or incentive to take out the fighters.

I spent a lot of matches just flying around aimlessly with nothing to fight in my SPAD or fokker.

Did you use HE? The APHE shell has 7mm fuze sensitivity, so it’s useless against the Zeppelin.

Yeah honestly I think this would be the best way to add them. Add a rank 0 with the aircraft at BR 0.0 - 0.7.

Oh, another balance issue with the great war:

It really, really highlighted the ridiculousness of maxed/ace crews.

Barely few seconds for gunners to get replaced is absurd. This is probably a significant reason why mark V did so badly. You snipe the gunner and he’s back in barely a few seconds.

What @sigma_zero said - what ammo did you use, and also did you actually hit it??

I think it wouldn’t be enough to be honest… performances between 1914, 135 km/h, unsynchronised mgs aircrafts and 1918, 200 km/h fighters is already pretty massive… if you put in interwar vehicles into the mix, especially early 1930’s fighter which could reach 300 kph, a single br bracket is going to be too small, and it won’t be pleasant, the same way facing a Kamov 50 in a Sikorsky H34 is unpleasant.

This is only the trailer music.
Where can we find battle music, that we hear in the event matches?

Same for me

They could go for maybe a different BR jumps between vehicles then. Maybe instead of 0.0 → 0.3 → 0.7 we instead could get a smaller scale like 0.1 → 0.2 etc and have change what BR’s you can see accordingly.

As I have to go to work soon, just had my final fight before the ‘Armistice’. It’s been a lot of fun, and a hreat honour to have fought with you all on the western fromtlines of the Great War! I loved the event, and I’m sad its basically over for me.

What I loved most was flying put the Fokker D.VII (even though the flight model isn’t right), which is one of my favourite historical planes, and it’s a shame I can’t keep it. But who knows, we don’t know what the future holds, so there may be hope

Here my final screenshots.

Some final thoughts:

  • CAS in a Zeppelin… who thought that might work? Maybe some area targets (heavy arty batteries, ammo dumps, supply depots) behind the lines might have been better, more realistic targets for Zeppelins and the bomber, each giving an appropriate ticket bleed on destruction: more tickets for deeper targets.

  • No real balance between most vehicles. Could have been somewhat fixed by differing SP and a fixed number of SP per player. You could start in anything, including air as many would have liked, and keep respawning while SP remain.

  • Given the lack of balance a PvE mode might have been better. Players take the aircraft and tanks used to support infantry as they attack lines of fortified pillboxes, trenches, mg nests etc. Even allow other players to occupy some heavily protected pillboxes as player opposition?

  • A wheeled truck that can cross trenches way wider than the wheels… Peak Gaijin. For a couple days I was avoiding trenches if I used the Garford. Then I saw it was able to cross trenches, so I gave it a try… yea, a genuine hover-truck. Totally ruined the feel of an impassable no-man’s land.

  • Much potential… if it wasn’t for Gaijin.

I used Aphe
(That is why the zepplin is so tanky)

I shot a few down with the St Chamond, normal ap shell

I also used APHE to some effect, as it was the round I had loaded by default, but usually I switched to HE after the first round. Usually took 3-5 rounds and even that might only give an assist. However, once fire took hold I expect the Zeppelin was doomed anyway, but I could usually get a few more rounds off. Only on one occasion did I one-shot a Zeppelin for an insta-kill, and that was with HE.

A big shout out for all the Zeppelin captains, as playing St Chamond AAA was sometimes the biggest single contribution to my 5k daily points - 3 kills and a few assists on one day, which was more kills than I got against tanks that day, although I likely had many more tank assists. The other major source of points was ‘just blowing up.’
