War Thunder: The Great War!

I like how the infantry move up to occupy captured points, and that when they’re occupying a point you can’t capture it until you machine gun them down. This is actually very close to how I wanted infantry to be implemented in WT, as mostly “set dressing” to make the battlefield feel more alive.

I do think neutral points should, instead of being completely vacant, start with a squad of infantry from each team already occupying them at the start of the match, shooting at eachother from across the trenches. Currently it’s sort of hard to interact with them as you have to either re-capture an enemy occupied point, or leeroy jenkins across no-mans-land to the enemies “home base” trenches and likely get cross-mapped by an enemy tank.

I also like how some of them have mounted machine guns and stuff. Hopefully we could get them on small AT guns to act as “spawn protection” if someone drives too close to the enemy spawn point. (Similar to airfield AA, but much less potent. Mainly so you have SOME sort of resistance to spawncamping besides just godmode for freshly spawned vehicles. Ideally said AT guns could also be blown up.)

The tech exists for AI AT guns, they have appeared in the World War mode before. And I think there are some AI howitzers in addition to the MGs on the event map.

I haven’t really noticed infantry capturing points, it feels like they mostly hang back and wait for a player to capture a point, and only then move up to occupy the captured point. (they act to block enemies from re-capturing the point until) Otherwise they sit in their “home base” trenches.

why not be able to keep the aircraft, spad, fokker, bomber, zeppelin, you put effort into it, so why not keep em? id be so much more interested in this event if i could keep the d. and zeppelin. neat event but dang its kinda sad

Yeah I’ve seen the howitzers too but there doesn’t seem to be any infantry manning them, I think they’re just part of the map and don’t fire. I do see a lot of explosions going off sometimes (maybe it really is them?) but I assume it’s just players spamming artillery. I’ll note the emplacements actually show up in the killfeed when destroyed (often by player artillery) and I’ve only seen “MG08” and Maxim/vickers something so I think the only ones in the mode are just the machine guns.

They absolutely throw grenades. Amusingly the allied grenades seem to resemble those german AT bundle grenades. (not sure if there’s a different model for each team.) They have long timers though and I think they can at most destroy a track.

the trailer was totally “wrong” not only cant we control infantry nor does it play in the current time (or 1970 at the earliest while the event plays in ww1)
so i dont know if the trailer was just an April fools joke or if it was/is referring to something else

Has anyone else noticed how the speed and horsepower on the st-chamond are completely different on the one you can unlock after you spade it and the one you play in the actual event

They said they are using boosted capabilities in the event, ergo - arcade model rather than realistic.

Ah ok, thanks

so they will be worse in-game besides the bomber obviously if it gets its 16 bomb load out

bruh why cant we keep the spad and fokker :(

So, to sum it all up

Event is just so frustrating to play

  • A7V doesn’t take any damage, can tank hits all day (all my frags are on anything other than a7v)
  • Garford just get stuck on anything
  • zeppelins are not physical objects and you can just fly straight through it
  • you can’t join the battle at german side at in any reasonable time
  • all battles as ententa ends up in lost battle and you get spawncamped

Yeah, i can’t remember any other time, when war thunder could managed to frustrate me so much in such a short time. Feels like nobody even playtested it before release. This is truly the worst event in gaijin history.

I’ve been all for adding more prewar tanks to the game, but this event changed my view on this

Great work, absolutely amazing to hang out in the Q for hours. I’ve got points for the Entente, but no chance for the Germans. A7V too strong (at least that’s how it feels; couldn’t play it, see above), Charmond trash (pretty accurate), Mark just feels weird, Gun Cart gets stuck on every straw.

Try again next year

yes, i want to squad up in one and play like jet rounds or something goofy, completely dumb, but i really want to do that

“i tested the armor with my service pistol it went straight trough”
some quote i heard from the Renault FT testing

They could be interesting if Gaijin actually bothered to balance the tanks and map. Right now the A7V is OP because of how mobile and survivable it is. Removing redundant crew and nerfing it’s mobility could make the balance so much better.

I’ve always thought WWI planes were better for WT.

THIS IS NOT FUN
The environment is just too badly done for these unfinished vehicles. You cant move on the terrain, the trench crossing tank cant cross the smallest trench without sliding erratically sideways, nothing can go uphill and it take 5 minutes to get to a cap zone if you’re lucky enough that the enemy arent just camping and waiting. What was the idea of this? give us a fully realistic idea of how terrible the front was, or to have a bit of fun? truly terrible game play in truly terrible tanks, on a truly unsuitable map

Whoever signed off on this event in it’s current state needs to be seriously questioned. I’ve not seen the allies win a single time. The A7V is completely OP (armour seems far too effective). You can either que for 15 minutes to play as the Germans and enjoy it, or play as the Allies as the role of sacrificial turkey in the turkey shoot. Truly the worst event I can remember Gaijin putting out for a long time. Just awful.
